UM OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE’S SPRING SESSION II–Intellectual enrichment & after-hours activities

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Miami has released its schedule of classes for the March 7 to April 15, 2011 spring session II. There are more than 30 classes in creative arts, foreign languages, computers and lecture courses for intellectual enrichment, as well as several after-hours activities. Each of these programs are designed to accommodate a relaxed learning style and make it easy for anyone who has been away from the formal learning environment for many years.

Creative arts classes include Wire Sculpture and Water Color Basics. Water Color Basics teaches the foundations of water coloring. Students will receive projects, assistance and critiques each week in order to hone their craft. Wire Sculpture guides students to demonstrate imagination through wire sculpture.

Language classes include different levels of Spanish, Italian and French. Political topics will be the discussion items. Elementary Spanish D is a fourth level course that is a continuation from Elementary Spanish C on speaking and writing in the past tense. By the end of this course students will be able to discuss anything from what happened last night to what happens every weekend. Beginning French Level D and Advanced French (which is being taught entirely in French) allow students to learn French or to jump back into the language. Elementary Italian Level B is a second level course that deals with speaking in the past and present tense as well as ordering and eating Italian style.

Computer classes allow for a better grasp on the ever-changing technology in our society. Computer Basics introduces students to the PC and some of its applications and programs. Advanced Microsoft Word 2007 is a continuation of the basic course and is for students who are already comfortable working with Microsoft Word 2007.

The lecture courses touch upon various areas of study including Wine Appreciation, Creative Writing and the Middle East and U.S. History A la Mode is a six week introduction course where University professors and community members will cover various historical topics like the Italian Renaissance, intergenerational stories of teen life in Miami, the Confederate States, the impact of Haiti on early US Republic, and China’s economic rise. Creative Writing will teach students the ideal tools to build short-story collections or novels. Current Events in the Middle East will examine problems facing Middle Eastern countries and America’s reactions.

After Hours activities are classes/programs organized after classes. This semester’s activities include Tai Chi and Singing Seniors. Tai Chi is a variety of Chinese slow moving and breathing exercises. Singing Seniors allows singers from all levels of talent to join together and sing in a relaxed environment.
