On Tuesday, December 12, the dark comedy short film “The Anne Frank Gift Shop” received a special screening at the Holocaust Museum LA. The event was made even more notable by the presence of filmmaker Mickey Rapkin, known for his work on the hit film “Pitch Perfect,” and actress-director-producer Elizabeth Banks, who served as the moderator for the post-screening conversation.

“The Anne Frank Gift Shop” delves into the question of whether there is a right or wrong way to discuss the Holocaust. This thought-provoking dark comedy explores themes of antisemitism and the effects of collective trauma. The narrative centers around a high-end design firm’s proposal to revamp the gift shop at The Anne Frank House, which sparks a contentious debate about the Holocaust, collective memory, and commercialization.
