United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abusein collaboration with Broward Behavioral Health Coalition & Broward County Government, will present The Behavioral Health Conference: Building Healthier Communities, a two-day conference promoting community awareness and support of behavioral health and substance abuse prevention.

  • Featuring two full days of breakout sessions and speakers, the Conference will provide a forum where participants can learn, inform, network and discuss issues related to research, policy and practice; expand professional knowledge; provide quality continuing education to behavioral health professionals; and promote community awareness of behavioral health and substance abuse prevention.
  • Prominent Speakers will include:

o   Darryl Strawberryformer Major League Baseball All-Star and World Series Champion, best-selling author and the Co-Founder of the Darryl Strawberry Recovery Center and Strawberry Ministries,will provide the Keynote Address during a Luncheon on May 10th.

o   Tonier Cain, Founder and Vice President for Trauma Informed Care Centers of America – Mr. Cain speaks nationally on trauma, incarceration, and recovery as an impactful consumer advocate.

o   Major Sam Cochran, First Memphis Police Department CIT Coordinator and CIT International Co-Chairperson – Major Cochran presents Crisis Intervention Team model nationally and consults with the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

o   James N. Hall, Epidemiologist with the Center for Applied Research on Substance Use and Health Disparities at Nova Southeastern University–  Mr. Hall tracks trends of substance abuse in Florida as the National Institute on Drug Abuse Community Epidemiology Work Group representative.

o   Debbie F. Plotnick, MSS, MLSP, Vice President for Mental Health and Systems Advocacy at Mental Health America – Ms. Plotnick leads organized advocacy and policy initiatives promoting recovery-oriented community-based services.

o   Silvia M. Quintana, LMHC, CAP, Chief Executive Officer of Broward Behavioral Health Coalition – Ms. Quintana oversees the development, implementation, and management of the substance abuse and mental health system of care for Broward County’s state contracts.

o   Broward County Commissioner Lois Wexler – Elected in 2004 to the Broward County Commission as the District 5 representative, Commissioner Wexler serves as Broward Behavioral Health Coalition Chair and is a foremost champion for behavioral health, human services, children, older adults, affordable housing, and public safety.
