The MOCA Art Institute at the Museum of Contemporary Art offers engaging opportunities for adult students of all levels to develop their creativity and gain a deeper understanding of the art of our time. Lectures, studio classes, artist forums and tours provide a continuous source of information and stimulation for culturally curious audiences.
MOCA BY MOONLIGHT
MOCA by MOONLIGHT, MOCA’s popular Wednesday evenings for adults, presents new perspectives on contemporary art and design through rotating weekly programs. The new season will begin on September 14 with Five Minutes of Fame, featuring interactive presentations by local artists on how and why they create (Artists who are interested in presenting their work should contact the museum for available dates). Five Minutes of Fame is free with museum admission.
Arts for All offers instruction and hands-on projects inspired by the work of renowned artists. On September 28, participants are invited to make wooden sculptures like Martin Puryear. Arts for All is $10 for members and $15 for non-members.
Contemporary Art Boot Camp, a lecture series by MOCA curators and art professionals, covers key figures, themes and trends in contemporary art. Jillian Hernandez, MOCA’s Outreach Coordinator and PhD candidate in Women’s and Gender Studies at Rutgers University, will present “(Re)thinking Sex through Contemporary Art: The Politics of Scandal, Pleasure and Disappointment.” The two-part lecture series, presented on October 19 and November 16, will draw from queer theory and interdisciplinary sexuality studies to examine the way contemporary art affects the way we think about sex. Contemporary Art Boot Camp is $10 for members and $15 for non-members.
In a special MOCA by Moonlight program on November 2, MOCA Executive Director and Chief Curator Bonnie Clearwater will present “A Conversation with Mark Rothko,” in which she will interview the actor playing the artist in the Gables Stage production of the bio-drama RED. Clearwater is a noted expert on Rothko and is the author of the major monograph The Rothko and Mark Rothko: Works on Paper. This program is $10 for members and $15 for non-members.
Spotlight programs are directed conversations with cultural practioners who make connections to MOCA exhibitions and current topics in art and design. On November 9, Lauren Cornell, the Executive Director of Rhizome and Adjunct Curator at the New Museum in New York City, will discuss the MOCA exhibition Modify, As Needed. Spotlight programs are free with museum admission and also will be offered on October 5 and October 12. MOCA Galleries are open until 9 pm on Wednesdays.
MOCA by Moonlight Programs are sponsored by Stephanie and Tom Bloom.
FIGURE DRAWING FOR ADULTS
Figure Drawing for Adults, offered on Tuesday mornings from 10 am to noon, will resume in October. Rendering the human figure in three-dimensions is one of the fundamental skills of artistic practice. With guidance from MOCA Education Curator Lark Keeler, participants explore different techniques in proportion, movement, texture and shading. The first session, starting October 4, is “Drawing and Painting the Figure in Ink.” In November, the class will explore drawing the figure in pastels. Each four-class series explores a different media and is designed for all skill levels. A nude model is present for the first and third session of each series. Individual classes are $20 for members and $25 for non-members. A series of four classes is $70 for members and $90 for non-members.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS
MOCA Art Institute offers professional development opportunities for educators in its quarterly Teacher Training Workshops. Educators of all levels and subject areas learn effective, engaging techniques and strategies to implement in their classrooms. Held on Miami Dade County Public School teacher planning days, educators may register to earn MPP points through the MDCPS website. On Thursday November 29, from 9 am to 3:30 pm, teachers will “Explore Native American Art.” Teacher Training Workshops are free for MOCA members and $12 for non-members.
DOCENTS
Adult docents learn about contemporary art and MOCA’s exhibitions and are trained to share that knowledge on tours with museum visitors. Joining the Docent Program is a great way to increase one’s knowledge of the art world. For more information on becoming a MOCA Docent, contact Jillian Hernandez at jihernandez@mocanomi.org.
