Part of our ongoing curation of what it means to live, love, and play in the Magic City.
Silverspot Cinema's Beyond the Pages book club returns on Friday, November 6 from 7 to 8:30 PM with José Eustasio Rivera's The Vortex — a Colombian novel that follows lovers Alicia and Arturo through the country's breathtaking landscape while exposing the harsh realities of the 20th-century rubber industry.
The series is facilitated by chief librarian Frank Luca and draws on themes from recent exhibitions. Each session connects the selected novel to the collection and broader cultural context — it's a book club with a curatorial angle rather than a casual read-along.
The Vortex (La vorágine) was first published in 1924 and is considered one of the foundational works of Latin American literature. Rivera wrote it after traveling through the Colombian and Venezuelan jungle regions himself, and the novel's portrait of the rubber boom's brutality remains striking.
Friday, November 6, 7–8:30 PM. Silverspot Cinema, 300 SE 3rd St, Downtown Miami. Free with registration at silverspot.net.
