The Forgotten Holiday: Miami Carnival, the Regatta, and a Full Columbus Day Weekend

Columbus Day weekend is one of the most underrated long weekends on the Miami calendar — Miami Carnival and J'ouvert in Lauderhill, the Columbus Day Regatta on Biscayne Bay, and South Beach running at full tilt October 9–12.

The Forgotten Holiday: Miami Carnival, the Regatta, and a Full Columbus Day Weekend

This Weekend's Geography

Columbus Day weekend doesn't get the attention it deserves in Miami. It should. Between Miami Carnival, the Columbus Day Regatta, and a South Beach nightlife calendar that treats the long weekend as a proper occasion, October 9–12 is one of the more packed stretches on the fall calendar.

Miami Carnival & J'ouvert

The centerpiece of the weekend is Miami Carnival, the Caribbean-American cultural festival that brings steelband music, costumed mas bands, and tens of thousands of people to the Broward County side of the metro. J'ouvert — the pre-dawn street celebration with paint, powder, and music — kicks things off Saturday morning, October 10. The main event, Carnival Day Parade & Fete, runs Sunday, October 11 from 11 AM to 11 PM at Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium in Lauderhill.

Miami Carnival has been running for decades and remains one of the largest Caribbean cultural events in the Southeast. If you've never been, the scale of the costumed parade is genuinely something — and J'ouvert is its own experience entirely, best understood by showing up before sunrise.

Columbus Day Regatta

Miami's oldest sailing regatta takes to Biscayne Bay on Saturday, October 10. The Columbus Day Regatta has been commemorating the 1492 voyage for over 60 years, and at this point it's as much a sandbar party as a sailing race — boats anchor up, people swim between them, and the bay turns into one of the more unusual social scenes in South Florida. The racing is real, but the atmosphere is the draw.

South Beach Nightlife

The long weekend brings the expected surge of celebrity-hosted events and club nights across South Beach. Vendôme Miami has programming running Friday through Sunday with artists including Quavo and Ty Dolla $ign. The usual circuit of rooftop parties and late-night sets fills in around it — Columbus Day weekend is one of those stretches where South Beach operates at something close to Art Week energy without the Art Week prices.

Miami Carnival J'ouvert: Saturday, October 10, Central Broward Park, Lauderhill. Carnival Day Parade & Fete: Sunday, October 11, 11 AM–11 PM, Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium. Columbus Day Regatta: Saturday, October 10, Biscayne Bay.
