THE COMPLETE CALENDAR…

Friday, September 2 Gables

image image arrowIn Miami: Mistress of the Americas (Univ. of Penn Press, $22.50) buy, author Jan Nijman connects different historical episodes and geographical regions to illustrate how transience has shaped the city to the present day, from the migrant labor camps in south Miami-Dade to the affluent gated communities along Biscayne Bay. Nijman likens the city itself to a hotel; people check in, go about their business or pleasure, then check out. Locals, born and raised in the area, make up only one-fifth of the population. Exiles, those who have come to Miami as a temporary haven due to political or economic necessity, are typically yearning to return to their homeland. Mobiles, the affluent and well educated, who reside in Miami’s most prized neighborhoods, are constantly on the move. Presented in collaboration with the University of Miami College of Arts & Sciences Center for the Humanities. 8pm

image image arrowCoral Gables Gallery Night Opening: The Children’s Trust Miami Heart Gallery is a traveling, museum-quality exhibit featuring portraits of children in Miami-Dade’s foster care system who are available for adoption. This year’s photos have a Mediterranean flare that accentuates the locations throughout Coral Gables that served as backdrops for the photo shoots, including the iconic Biltmore Hotel. Adopting a child out of foster care can be the most rewarding experience of a lifetime, both for your family and your new child. Legal adoption means that the child becomes a member of your family and is no longer a part of the foster care system. As an adoptive parent, you make all decisions for your adopted child, just as you would for your biological children. Almost anyone can adopt. You don’t have to be married. You don’t have to make a lot of money. You just need to be willing to love and provide for a child in need. For additional information visit us on www.miamiheartgallery.org. 7-10pm

A new school comes with new friends and new enemies, and lucky for Mickey, it also comes with a great new girlfriend, Ashley. For a while, it seems like Mickey’s train-wreck of a life is finally improving – until Ashley vanishes without a trace. Unwilling to let another person walk out of his life, Mickey follows Ashley’s trail into a seedy underworld that reveals that this seemingly sweet, shy girl isn’t who she claimed to be. image image arrowIn The Arrogant Years (Ecco, $25.99) buy, Lucette Lagnado tells the story of her mother, Edith, coming of age in a magical old Cairo of dusty alleyways and grand villas inhabited by pashas and their wives. Then Lagnado revisits her own early years in America–first, as a schoolgirl in Brooklyn’s immigrant enclaves, where she dreams of becoming the fearless Mrs. Emma Peel of The Avengers, and later, as an “avenging” reporter for some of America’s most prestigious newspapers. A stranger growing up in a strange land, when she turns sixteen Lagnado’s adolescence is further complicated by cancer. Its devastating consequences would rob her of her “arrogant years” – the years defined by an overwhelming sense of possibility, invincibility, and confidence. Lagnado looks to the women sequestered behind the wooden screen at her childhood synagogue, to the young coeds at Vassar and Columbia in the 1970s, to her own mother and the women of their past in Cairo, and reflects on their stories as she struggles to make sense of her own choices. Presented in collaboration with the Inter-American Chapter of Hadassah. 7:30pm

In the end–with the help of devoted friends, a twelve-step recovery program, and a bit of Kabbalistic wisdom–her struggle with the things of this world is transformed from a distraction into its own journey of healing and personal growth. 8pm

image image arrowIn Demon Fish (Pantheon, $26.95) buy, Juliet Eilperin investigates the fascinating ways different individuals and cultures relate to the ocean’s top predator. Along the way, she reminds us why, after millions of years, sharks remain among nature’s most awe-inspiring creatures. From Belize to South Africa, from Shanghai to Bimini, we see that sharks are still the objects of an obsession that may eventually lead to their extinction. Yet we also see glimpses of how people and sharks can exist alongside one another: surfers tolerating their presence off Cape Town and ecotourists swimming with sharks that locals in the Yucatán no longer have to hunt. With a reporter’s instinct for a good story and a scientist’s curiosity, Eilperin offers us an up-close understanding of these extraordinary, mysterious creatures in the most entertaining and illuminating shark encounter you’re likely to find outside a steel cage. 6:30pm

image image arrowFilm icon Nat Chediak in conversation with Spanish filmmaker and writer David Trueba. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, David Trueba – at age 42 – has become an essential presence in Spanish culture as award-winning novelist, screenwriter and filmmaker as well as media columnist for El País, Spain’s leading daily. David Trueba: Recent Work showcases his various interests, focusing on films that are new to South Florida, as is the presentation of his third novel, the first translated into English. Soldiers of Salamina (2003) is one of the great Spanish films of the decade, an exploration – in present and past tense – of the burden of memory as it shapes the legacy of the Spanish Civil War. In stark contrast, Welcome Home (2006) is a choral comedy that follows a young man on the road to adulthood, as he leaves the home he was born into and finds another in the workplace. ¿Qué fué de Jorge Sanz? (2010) is a  three-hour, six-part miniseries that blithely blends fact and fiction as it chronicles, with biting irony, the seriocomic travails of a child actor nobody seems to want as he stares middle age in the face. Recent Work is a portrait of a major artist on the move. Nat Chediak is the dean of South Florida specialized film exhibitors. First at the Cinematheque (1973-1988), later at the Miami Film Festival (1984-2001), the work of some of today’s major international filmmakers received their first American exposure. In 2000, at the age of 50, he entered the recording studio for the first time. In the past decade, as music producer, he has won 6 Grammy awards. He is the author of the biographical Diccionaro de jazz latino, the first book published (in 1998) about Latin Jazz. At present, Mr. Chediak is working on a second book, Of Life and Laughter that will mark his return to Film. 1pm

image image image arrowThe conversation continues with Nat Chediak highlighting the literary work of David Trueba – one of Spain’s most celebrated contemporary writers – as he discusses his first novel to be translated into English. Set against the maze of Madrid’s congested and contested streets, Learning to Lose (Other Press, $16.95) buy follows four individuals as they swerve off course in unexpected directions. It is Sylvia’s sixteenth birthday, and her life as an adult is about to begin–not with the party she had been planning, but with a car accident and a broken leg. Behind the wheel is a talented young soccer player, just arrived from Buenos Aires and set for stardom on and off the field. As their destinies collide and a young romance is set in motion, across town, Sylvia’s father and grandfather are finding their own lives suddenly derailed by a violent murder and a secret affair with a prostitute. Each of them is dodging guilt and the fear of failure, but their shared search for happiness, love, purity, redemption, and, above all, a way to survive forms a taut narrative web that binds the characters together. This event is part of a weeklong series, Nat Chediak presents… David Trueba: Recent Work, highlighting the Spanish artist’s diverse artistic output and presented in collaboration with the Centro Cultural Español and the Coral Gables Art Cinema, with support from the Betsy Hotel. 2pm

arrowJoin us for the third in a series of four, free community forums sponsored by the ACLU of Florida with panelists: Nan Rich, State Senator, Democrat (Minority) Leader; Kendall Coffey, Attorney; Phillip Hubbart, Judge; Rosemary Barkett, Judge, former Chief Justice Florida Supreme Court; Moderated by: Howard Simon, Executive Director, ACLU of Florida. The U.S.Constitution and the Accompanying Bill of Rights form the foundation of our society. The principles embedded in these documents provide the guideposts for civil liberties, which the ACLU has sworn to protect since its founding in 1920. Our panelists, who represent the legislative and judicial branches of our government, act on our behalf to advance these principles and to protect the civil liberties contained within these documents. Good government is alive today because of the marriage between our representatives and the ACLU. Any separation of these partners could lead to the decline of the Republic for which we stand! Issues from freedom of assembly to voting rights will be open for discussion, particularly as they apply to the citizens of the State of Florida. 5pm

image image arrowKen Esrig‘s Start From Where You Are (Authorhouse, $15.49) buy, is a guide for you, the entrepreneur, to a place that will help you reach your personal goals, both financially and emotionally. Learn how to take your current situation and turn it into success. Follow your heart and learn how to create a business through simple to understand and fun examples. The lack of jobs and crash of the housing market have left an entire country looking for ways to pay their bills. The internet has helped turn ordinary people into entrepreneurs, forced to find new sources of income. Americans are weighing their options and starting businesses at unbelievable rates. Rather than being hardcore entrepreneurs, these are regular people surviving financial crisis and potential foreclosure. You are the hero in your story. You will be given simple clues to how you can make your life exciting and fulfilling. Too much you say? Then you do not believe in yourself and your ability. Regardless of where you have been in the past you now find yourself where you are. Start From Where You Are by taking a personal assessment of who you really are and what you enjoy doing. I have included a worksheet called the 1,2,3’s of Short Term Goals, which can be completed while you read. You should pay attention to the thought process that has been laid out for you. Thinking like an entrepreneur is natural for some, yet seemingly impossible for others. There are no guarantees in life and your journey will not be easy. If you assume the role of hero and muster your brains, heart and courage, you can Start From Where You Are. You must begin by believing that the hero always wins; with the right plan. So: Start From Where You Are. 7pm

image arrowThe Everglades Wilderness Waterway winds an enthralling path through rivers, bays, and streams on the southwestern edge of Everglades National Park. Rich with wildlife and scenic beauty, it also poses many challenges for paddlers. Canoeists and kayakers must deal with wind, waves, limited campsites (in the form of “chickee” platforms over the water and historic groundsites), and no fresh water. As veterans of this complex passage, authors Holly Genzen and Anne Sullivan turn those limitations into glorious, safe adventure in Paddling the Everglades (Menasha Ridge Press, $15.95) buy. Some out-and-back paddles lead to the rivers and bays of the Everglades National Park’s interior; others wind to Gulf Coast sites; still others loop around islands, mangrove forests, or other natural phenomena. The authors provide marker-by-marker route descriptions (both north to south and south to north), and comprehensive information on safety, supplies, campsites, and navigation. They also chronicle the waterway’s wildlife, social history, and origin of place names encountered along the way. 6:30pm

image image arrow Common Law, History, and Democracy in America, 1790-1900: Legal Thought Before Modernism (Cambridge University Press, $89.25) buy argues for a change in our understanding of the relationships among law, politics, and history. Kunal M. Parker shows that the world of the nineteenth century looked rather different. Democracy was itself constrained by a sense that history possessed a logic, meaning, and direction that democracy could not contravene. In such a world, far from law being seen in opposition to democracy, it was possible to argue that law specifically, the common law did a better job than democracy of guiding America along history’s path. Presented in collaboration with the University of Miami College of Arts & Science Center for the Humanities. 8pm

image image arrowSwine flu, tsunamis, terrorists, magic bullets, stress, peanut allergies or simply old age – the end is inescapable. Therefore, it’s imperative to start living consciously. We are responsible for creating our own destiny. Our gut, the GPS we’re born with, can always be trusted and will never lead us astray. Silver linings will be found if we’re willing to look. And as Paul and John once said, love is all you need. If you’ve read The Secret and still feel unfulfilled, Live Like a Fruit Fly (HCI, $14.95) buy is what you’ve been searching for.  Author Gabe Berman claims it’s the last book you’ll need to create the life you deserve. The life you hoped for starts today. “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.” – Henry David Thoreau 6:30pm

image image arrow During World War II, German U-boats prowled the Atlantic, sinking hundreds of U.S. ships along the east coast. Nazi agents even landed on Long Island with explosives and maps of railways, bridges, and defense plants. Desperate to secure the coast, the Navy turned to Meyer Lansky, the Jewish Mob boss. A newly naturalized American whose fellow Eastern European Jews were being annihilated by Hitler, Lansky headed an unlikely fellowship of mobsters Lucky Luciano, Bugsy Siegel, Frank Costello, and naval intelligence officers. The Mob caught Nazi agents, planted propaganda with the help of columnist Walter Winchell, and found Mafia spies to plot the invasion of Sicily, where General Patton was poised to strike at the soft underbelly of the Axis. Lansky’s men stopped at nothing to sabotage Hitler’s push toward American shores. Written by Eric Dezenhall and based on real events, The Devil Himself (Thomas Dunne, $25.99) buy is a high-energy novel of military espionage and Mafia justice. 8pm

image image arrowRarely does one hear about the experiences of German children during World War II. Born in Berlin in 1941, Sabina de Werth Neu knew little during her earliest years except the hardships and fear of a war refugee. She and her two sisters and mother were often on the run and sometimes homeless in the bombed-out cities of wartime Germany. At times they lived in near-starvation conditions. And as the Allies stormed through the crumbling German defenses, the mother and children were raped and beaten by marauding Russian soldiers. After the war, the family wrapped themselves in a cloak of deafening silence about their recent national and personal history, determined to forget the past. A Long Silence (Prometheus Books, $19) buy not only recalls the experiences of a now-distant war but brings to mind the disturbing realities of present-day refugee children. 8pm

image arrowFREE FILM SCREENING: I AM is a prismatic, probing, and utterly engaging non-fiction film that poses two provocative questions: what’s wrong with our world and what we can do to make it better? The filmmaker asking these questions is Tom Shadyac, one of Hollywood’s leading comedy practitioners and the creative force behind such blockbusters as “Ace Ventura,” “Liar Liar,” “The Nutty Professor,” and “Bruce Almighty.” Armed with nothing but his innate curiosity and a camera crew to film his adventures, Shadyac set out on a twenty-first century quest for enlightenment. The result is a fresh, energetic, and life-affirming film that challenges our preconceptions about human behavior at the same time that it celebrates man’s innate ability to be better. Will Tyler can fly on a football field. He may not be the biggest running back around, but no one can touch him when it comes to hitting the hole and finding the end zone. image image arrowSuspended in a strangely modern-day version of limbo, the young man at the center of Russell Banks’ new novel must create a life for himself in the wake of incarceration. Known in his new identity only as the Kid, and on probation after doing time for a liaison with an underage girl, he is forbidden to live within 2,500 feet of children. LETRA URBANA ENCUENTROS at Books & Books: Arte y Ecología, M Thereza Negreiros, presentación a cargo de Francine Birbragher y Adriana Herrera, curadoras y escritoras independientes. 6:30pm
