WHO: MARIACHI EL BRONX
WHAT: Born out of their passion for traditional Mexican music, Mariachi El Bronx is the brass-centric alter ego of Los Angeles punk band the Bronx. The genre-crossing group debuted with Mariachi El Bronx. While a punk ethos remains at the core of the group’s sound, albums like II, III, and 2026’s IV have found them respectfully embracing core Latin American styles like cumbia, norteño, and bolero. Conceived in 2006, the idea came about when the Bronx were asked to play an acoustic set. However, rather than simply pare down their sound, leader Matt Caughthan took their music in a whole new direction, moving away from hardcore and exploring the brass-centric, Mexican mariachi band sound. Over the next few years, Caughthan stayed busy with the Bronx, releasing two albums. In 2026, Mariachi El Bronx delivered IV, a more traditional-sounding, if no less exuberant production, anchored by the single “Forgive or Forget.”
