The Museum Of Contemporary Art, North Miami’s Jazz at MOCA monthly concert series will offer a special expanded program on Friday, June 29.  Prior to the 8 pm performance by trumpeter Jean Caze, there will be a special reading at 7 pm of  two children’s books by Haitian authors, followed by a family art activity.  The free book readings will be held at 7 pm in the MOCA Pavilion and the free outdoor concert will be held at 8 pm in MOCA Plaza in front of the Museum of Contemporary Art located at 770 NE 125th Street.

Haitian-born, Miami resident Jean Caze, is known for his fluid tone and understated delivery.  Caze has performed with legendary Herbie Hancock, opened for Wynton Marsalis Quartet and played with the famed rock group, Chicago.  He has toured with Tommy Dorsey Jazz Orchestra and was the winner of the 2007 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and performed with Roberta Flack at Howard University in Washington, DC.
His performance will be preceded by readings from two children’s books Mommy, tell me about Haiti, by Jeanine Agnant and Alexandra Barbot and Hannah Has A Story by Hannah Yoldine Lowenstein. Alexandra Barbot is Haitian born and educated illustrator, visual artist and author who lives in Miami.  Nine-year old Hannah Lowenstein was born in Haiti and adopted after the 2010 earthquake by Pompano Beach residents Susan and Jerry Lowenstein.
Understanding that Hannah needed an outlet where she could express herself while learning English, her mother enrolled her in painting classes to help the child communicate .  Even at such a young age, Hannah was able to paint with the vividness and depth that are traditional in Haitian art.   Her self-published book “Hannah Has A Story,” includes reproductions of 25 of Hannah’s paintings.

Following the book readings, children and their families will be able to make their own colorful paintings in the vibrant palette and style common to artwork from Haiti.

Jazz at MOCA is generously sponsored by AP Beach and the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency.  The Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 770 NE 125th Street in North Miami.  For more information, call 305.893.6211 or visit www.mocanomi.org.
