Herb & Dorothy At Cosford Cinema
This film tells the extraordinary story of Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk, and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history with very modest means. In the early 1960s Herb and Dorothy Vogel quietly began purchasing the works of unknown artists. Devoting all of Herb’s salary to purchase art they liked, and living on Dorothy’s paycheck alone, they continued collecting artworks guided by two rules: the piece had to be affordable, and it had to be small enough to fit in their one-bedroom Manhattan apartment. After thirty years of meticulous collecting and buying, the Vogels managed to accumulate over two thousand pieces, filling every corner of their tiny one bedroom apartment. The film begins at 6pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. $8, ($6 seniors) cash only. Call 305-284-4861. http://www.cosfordcinema.com

David Luis-Brown: Waves of Decolonization
In Waves of Decolonization (Duke University Press $24.95), David Luis-Brown reveals how between the 1880s and the 1930s, writer-activists in Cuba, Mexico and the United States developed narratives and theories of decolonization, of full freedom and equality in the shadow of empire. Analyzing the work of nationalist leaders, novelists, and social scientists, including W. E. B. Du Bois, José Martí and Claude McKay, Luis-Brown brings together an array of thinkers who linked local struggles against racial oppression and imperialism to similar struggles in other nations. In focusing on the transnational production of the national in the wake of U.S. imperialism, Luis-Brown emphasizes the need for expanding the linguistic and national boundaries of U.S. American culture and history. Tom Healy: What the Right Hand Knows
A sensual, urgent debut collection, Tom Healy’s What the Right Hand Knows (Four Way Books $15.95) moves from farmyard to cityscape as it depicts a teetering, asymmetric world. A speaker “deaf in one ear” ponders that “the Moon’s dark side has no sound”; a mother and child finally “take the journey they’d talked about” but get only “a Sunday drive on Tuesday,” a near-miss “tracing circumferences.” Healy’s assured rhythms and measured stresses ballast the uncertainty of social relationships and bodily suffering. He seeks past the self for ways to act in his intimate, intelligent, and lively debut. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 6pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com

Kay Redfield Jamison: Nothing Was the Same
From the internationally acclaimed author of An Unquiet Mind, an exquisite, haunting meditation on mortality, grief, and loss — Nothing Was the Same (Knopf $25). Perhaps no one but Kay Redfield Jamison — who combines the acute perceptions of a psychologist with a writerly elegance and passion — could bring such a delicate touch to the subject of losing a spouse to cancer. In direct, straightforward, and at times strikingly lyrical prose, Jamison looks back at her relationship with her husband, Richard Wyatt, a renowned scientist who battled debilitating dyslexia to become one of the foremost experts on schizophrenia. And with her characteristic honesty, candor, wit, and simplicity, she describes his death, her own long, difficult struggle with grief, and her efforts to distinguish grief from depression. But she also recalls the great joy that Richard brought her during the nearly twenty years they had together. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. RJ Ellory: A Quiet Belief in Angels
Joseph Vaughan’s life has been dogged by tragedy in R.J. Ellory’s A Quiet Belief in Angels (Orion, $13). Growing up in the 1950s, he was at the centre of series of killings of young girls in his small rural community. The girls were taken, assaulted and left horribly mutilated. Barely a teenager himself, Joseph becomes determined to try to protect his community and classmates from the predations of the killer. Despite banding together with his friends as The Guardians, he was powerless to prevent more murders — and no one was ever caught. Only after a full ten years did the nightmare end when the one of his neighbors is found hanging from a rope, with articles from the dead girls around him. Thankfully, the killings finally ceased. But the past won’t stay buried — for it seems that the real murderer still lives and is killing again. And the secret of his identity lies in Joseph’s own history.
