The King Mango Strut Is Counting Down to 43 — and It Starts With a Party in the Grove

Coconut Grove's self-proclaimed "Weirdest Parade in the Universe" kicks off its 43rd season with a free block party on October 10, a poster unveiling by artist Dave L, and live music from The Chili Guys. The parade itself follows January 3.

The King Mango Strut Is Counting Down to 43 — and It Starts With a Party in the Grove

There is exactly one parade in Miami where the Marching Freds show up, the Synchronized Briefcase Brigade takes the street seriously, and the year's most absurd headlines get turned into costumes, signs, and performance art that makes no apologies. The King Mango Strut has been doing this since 1984. It is not stopping now.

The 43rd annual parade steps off January 3, 2027 — but the season starts October 10. That's when the Strut throws its free Poster and Theme Unveiling Block Party along the Fuller Street promenade in Coconut Grove, 6 to 9 p.m. Artist Dave L's official 2027 poster gets its public debut. The theme gets announced. The Chili Guys play reggae-fusion-funk until 9. The Coconut Grove School of Rock opens the night at 6. All of it is free.

"The poster and theme unveiling is really where the King Mango Strut begins each year," said Carl Levin, president of the Strut. "It's the first chance for everyone to get a taste of what's coming and to start thinking about all the wonderfully ridiculous material the past year has given us."

What the Strut Actually Is

The King Mango Strut started as a parody of the King Orange Jamboree Parade — the old Orange Bowl tradition that took itself very seriously. The Strut took the opposite approach. It has never looked back. Over four decades, it has grown into one of Miami's most beloved community institutions while somehow staying exactly as weird as it was at the beginning.

The formula is simple: take the year's headlines, personalities, and absurdities, hand them to a few hundred Strutters with costumes and signs and a willingness to embarrass themselves publicly, and let them loose on the streets of Coconut Grove. Past editions have produced the Million Chad March, Weapons of Mass Distraction, and the "Running of the Bullshitters." Each one was a perfect artifact of its moment.

More than 10,000 spectators show up every January. The parade is free to watch and free to march in. The only requirements are an open mind and a willingness to laugh — occasionally at yourself.
