ATRA Form Gallery has opened "Middle Distance," a group exhibition curated by Gaia Matisse at its New York City gallery at 43 Clarkson. The show is on view through December 15 and features works by four artists — Andreas Diaz Andersson, Nick Farhi, Sophie Matisse, and Enrique Veganzones — working across Mexico City, New York, and Spain.
The title refers to the part of a picture that sits between foreground and background — where the eye settles before it reads detail or depth. Each artist in the exhibition works in that space. Together, the show traces the arrival into New York: the city glimpsed at a distance, all promise and no detail; the fast, peripheral blur of a place always in motion; and the stillness beneath the noise.
"Middle Distance follows a single approach into New York: the arrival, and then the two cities that wait on the other side of it. One skyline, two interiors: a shape, a silence, and a speed." — Gaia Matisse
Founded in Mexico in 2014 by Alexander Diaz Andersson and Maria Eugenia Diaz, ATRA is an international architecture and design practice working across collectible furniture, interiors, architecture, and large-scale master planning. Rooted in craftsmanship, material exploration, and a dialogue between nature, science, and technology, the studio brings together architects, designers, engineers, and master artisans. Through its Mexico City manufacturing atelier, ATRAFORM, the practice unites traditional techniques with contemporary innovation. ATRA has received international recognition including the 2024 Prix Versailles for ILIS in New York, Best Curio at Design Miami 2021, and inclusion in Architectural Digest's AD100.
