Betty White said it plainly: "At 90, my problem is I can't find anybody older than I. So yes — I just enjoy men. — Betty White" — and Premier Guide Miami was in the room when it happened.
On January 3, 2013, Betty White and executive producer Chris Cohen joined a press call ahead of the Season 2 premiere of NBC's Betty White's Off Their Rockers, airing Tuesday, January 8th. The seven-time Emmy Award winner was 91 years old and showed no signs of slowing down. Season 2 featured special guests PSY and Kim Kardashian. Daedrian McNaughton spoke with Betty about the one question nobody else thought to ask.
At 90, my problem is I can't find anybody older than I. So yes — I just enjoy men.
With all this resurgence of your popularity, you seem to be surrounded by a lot of young, attractive men. When a woman in her 40s goes after younger men, they're called cougars. What do they call a woman in her 90s?
Well, in your 90s, my problem is all my life I've always wanted — I never was interested in younger men. He always had to be a little older than I, and my problem now at 90 is I can't find anybody older than I.
So you have no choice but to go after younger ones now, is that it?
Yes, well, I just — let's face it. I enjoy men.
With everything going on with reality shows and them seeming to take over a lot of TV, what is your opinion about the direction of television today?
Love Miami covers the city's conversations — the interviews, the creative voices, the tastemakers and innovators who define South Florida's cultural identity. This is the pillar where Miami speaks for itself.
Well, I think TV has changed, but I think the audience has changed more than anything else. The audience has seen every plot. They've heard every joke. So they keep being a challenge, and the producers and show people try to top themselves or get unusual. And I think every once in a while, just a good old-fashioned straightforward television show, or a situation comedy, suddenly hits the spot. It's almost like something they haven't seen for a while.
On Ed Asner and PSY
Betty described her friendship with Ed Asner — who appeared in Season 2 — as one built on loving antagonism: "We've always adored each other. I don't think we've ever said a nice word to each other, but we adore each other. You know that kind of friendship." On working with PSY, she was equally charmed: "He was very, very nice, and so funny. I don't think he wanted to teach us the dance, but I tried to copy him anyway."
On humor, longevity, and why she won't retire
Betty traced her sense of humor to her father, a salesman who brought jokes home and sorted them by appropriateness: "He'd say, now sweetheart, you can take that one to school, but I wouldn't take that one to school." On the secret to longevity: "Honesty. You can fool everybody else maybe, but you can't fool that camera. That camera will know when you're faking it every time." On retirement: "Why quit something you're enjoying so much? Who at 91 would ever expect to still get invited to do shows? If they ask me, I'll take it." Betty White's Off Their Rockers Season 2 premiered Tuesday, January 8th at 8 p.m. Eastern on NBC.
