Formula E Is Coming to Miami: The ABB FIA World Championship E-Prix Returns February 20
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship brings its all-electric open-wheel racing series to Hard Rock Stadium on February 20, 2027 — a rare chance to see the future of motorsport live in South Florida.
Part of our ongoing curation of what it means to live, love, and play in the Magic City.
This Weekend's Geography
1 neighborhoodMiami is becoming one of the great motorsport cities in the world. The Formula 1 Hard Rock Miami Grand Prix has established itself as one of the marquee events on the F1 calendar. Now, the city adds another chapter: the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship Miami E-Prix, scheduled for Saturday, February 20, 2027, at Hard Rock Stadium.
Formula E is not a lesser version of Formula 1. It is a different discipline — faster off the line, quieter at speed, and built around a generation of drivers who grew up racing electric.
Formula E is the ABB FIA World Championship for all-electric open-wheel racing cars. It launched in 2014 and has grown into a genuine world championship, with manufacturers including Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan, DS Automobiles, Maserati, and McLaren all fielding factory teams. The cars are fast — capable of 0–60 in under 2.8 seconds — and the racing is close, with a format designed to produce overtaking and strategy battles throughout the race.
What Makes Formula E Different
The most immediate difference from Formula 1 is the sound. Formula E cars are electric — the sound is a high-pitched whine rather than the roar of a combustion engine. It takes about five minutes to recalibrate, and then the racing takes over. The circuits are typically street circuits or purpose-built tracks in urban environments, which means the action is close to the barriers and the overtaking opportunities are real. The Attack Mode system — where drivers can gain a temporary power boost by driving through a designated zone off the racing line — adds a strategic layer unique to the series.
Miami's Motorsport Moment
The addition of Formula E to the Hard Rock Stadium calendar — alongside the Formula 1 Grand Prix in April and the 2027 F1 calendar — confirms what has been building for several years: Miami is now one of the premier motorsport destinations in North America. The city hosts two world championship racing events within three months of each other, both at the same venue. That is a remarkable concentration of top-tier motorsport.
The February timing also works in Miami's favor. Winter in South Florida means ideal racing weather — warm, dry, and a world away from the conditions teams are dealing with in Europe and Asia during the same period. Expect a strong international contingent of fans making the trip specifically for the E-Prix.
