Art Basel Miami Beach is often discussed in terms of its VIP previews, collector dinners, and six-figure transactions. But the fair has always had a parallel life — one that is accessible, educational, and genuinely welcoming to families. The 2026 edition offers more free and family-friendly programming than ever, both inside the Convention Center and across the city's cultural institutions.

Art Kids: Free Childcare at the Fair

Art Basel's Art Kids program is one of the fair's most underutilized offerings — and one of its most valuable. The program provides complimentary, fully supervised childcare for children aged 5 to 11, led by the Miami Children's Museum, running during all fair hours from Wednesday, December 2 through Sunday, December 6.

This year's Art Kids program is themed around space and cosmic exploration. Children are immersed in hands-on art activities, storytelling, building, and creative play inspired by contemporary artists. The program explores the connections between art and science through the lens of stars, planets, and galaxies — making it genuinely engaging rather than simply supervised.

The program is complimentary for all Art Basel Miami Beach ticket and card holders. Children must be between 5 and 11 years old. Capacity is limited and participation is first-come, first-served. Pre-registration is required — complete the form and return it by email to dpinon@miamichildrensmuseum.org. Location: East Lobby, Level 2, Rooms 229A & 228A, Miami Beach Convention Center.

Children aged 12 and under receive free admission to the fair when accompanied by an adult with a valid Art Basel ticket. A valid children's ticket is mandatory and can be added after selecting an adult ticket. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Baby strollers are welcome throughout the venue. Nursing pods are available in the West Lobby (Level 2) and next to Art Kids in the East Lobby (Level 2).

Cultural Institutions Open to All During Art Week

Beyond the complimentary-access program, many of Miami's cultural institutions offer programming that coincides with Art Basel week and is open to the general public. The Bass Museum (Miami Beach's contemporary art museum) presents Abraham Cruzvillegas: Autocontusión, Sarah Zapata: Against a State of Malevolence, and works by Gabriel Rico, Yuko Mohri, Amalia Pica, and Pedro y Juana. ICA Miami presents solo exhibitions by Carroll Dunham, Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe, Naudline Pierre, and Diego Singh.

The Bakehouse Art Complex — founded in 1985 in a former Art Deco-era bakery — presents Homegrown and BAKEHOUSE @ COLDEFY / COLDEFY @ BAKEHOUSE. Locust Projects, Miami's longest-running alternative art space, presents The MARE MAGNVM Cosmology - Chapter I: MARE MAGNVM. Lowe Art Museum in Coral Gables presents Young, Gifted and Black: The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection of Contemporary Art.

For families interested in private collections, El Espacio 23 (Jorge M. Pérez Collection) presents Nothing Is Linear: Relations Across Latin America and Its Diasporas. The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse presents Realism: Paintings and Sculptures alongside light installations and kinetic sculpture. Girls' Club presents Container for the Spirit — the only private collection open to the public focused exclusively on contemporary art by women.

Guided Tours: What Families Need to Know

Guided tours of Art Basel Miami Beach are organized in partnership with ArtNexus and available daily during show hours. Tours can be booked directly with ArtNexus. Admission to Art Basel is not included in the guided tour purchase. The ArtNexus desk and meeting point is located in the North West Lobby, Level 2.

For self-guided tour groups, all groups must register prior to the show using the Self-Guided Tour Group Registration form. Groups cannot exceed 6 people per group on VIP Days (Wednesday, December 2 from 4pm and Thursday, December 3) and 12 people per group on Public Days (Friday, December 4 through Sunday, December 6). Due to the fragility of certain artworks and booth space restrictions, some galleries are not open for group visits — a Group Visit Refusal List is available from Art Basel.

Customized tours for corporate and private groups can be arranged by contacting tours@artnexus.com. Tours are available in English and Spanish; German, Mandarin, and Russian are available upon request.

Practical Tips for Families

Manual wheelchairs and scooters are offered complimentary at the Miami Beach Convention Center and available on a first-come, first-served basis. They can be picked up at the Coat & Bag Check in the North, West, and East Lobby. The venue has been equipped with amenities to provide accessibility to persons with disabilities.

Some galleries may present works that are not suitable for children. To request the list of participating galleries that have identified mature content, contact the Art Basel team directly. The security team is present throughout the venue to protect both visitors and artworks. Children should be reminded not to touch the artworks — even gentle contact can damage delicate surfaces.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2026 runs December 2–6 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33139. Public days are December 4–6, 11am–6pm. Tickets are available at the official Art Basel online ticket shop.
