South Florida’s Montoya to Start Seventh at Phoenix Saturday Night

“We are a top-five team, easily. We run in the top-five every week. We’re there.”

–Juan Pablo Montoya, who qualified 7th for Saturday’s Sprint Cup race at Phoenix

South Florida-resident Juan Pablo Montoya is heading to Phoenix in hopes of regaining the form that propelled him into the NASCAR Chase for the Championship which will again culminate at Homestead-Miami Speedway Nov. 21.  Two weeks ago at Martinsville, Montoya was strong early but drove to a 36th-place result after a blown tire caused him to crash, resulting in another of the DNFs that has haunted him this season.

“Hopefully we can have a clean day and get things back on track for the Target team,” said Montoya.  “Last couple of weeks has been kind of rough for us.  But it’s okay.  Overall the team keeps doing an amazing job, brings good Chevrolet racecars, good motors.  I can’t complain.”

Montoya has raced six times at Phoenix with one Top 10 finish – an eighth place result which came last fall.  Montoya struggled in Friday’s practice sessions but found the right setup for qualifying Friday evening.  The No. 42 Target Chevrolet was fast enough for the pole position early during qualifications before changing track conditions afforded faster runs.  Montoya will start seventh Saturday night.

Montoya continues his pursuit of NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series Championship—to be crowned Nov. 21 on his “home track” of Homestead-Miami Speedway—on Saturday, April 10, at Phoenix. The race will be broadcast on FOX at 7 PM.
