Beloved romantic Latin balladeer José José will celebrate his 50 year musical anniversary at Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on December 16, 2012 at 7 p.m. Tickets go on sale October 19 at 10 a.m.
José José has sold more than 50 million records over his five decade career. His performance and distinctive vocal style have influenced a big number of Latin pop artists and he is considered an icon of the Latin pop music industry.
José Rómulo Sosa Ortiz, known by his artistic name José José, is a Mexican singer referred to in the entertainment world as “El Príncipe de la Canción (The Prince of Song).” He is renowned for his romantic ballads and vocals.
Born into a family of musicians, José José started his musical career in his early teens playing guitar and singing in serenades in his native Mexico City. In the 1960s, his fame began to rise with songs like “Una Mañana” and “Cuidado” and television appearances. The album Cuidado (1969) remains stands as a timeless standard in Latin music history. It included such hits as “Morning”, “Agua on Sal” and the James Bond-inspired “Monolongo.”
The 1970s found José a commercial success with this version of the Dino Ramos hit “La Nave del Olvido” that became his first big hit in Mexico and Latin America. That same year, he released “El Triste” to a standing ovation at the prestigious Festival de la Canción Latina. While he only earned third place that evening, he became number one in the heart of all Latin America.
From that moment on, José’s career reached both highs and lows of apocalyptic proportions. His well-publicized medical and personal problems plagues him until he recorded 1983’s Secretos, the most widely received and largest-selling album (11 million copies) of his career. Secretos was nominated for Best Latin Pop Performance at the 1985 Grammy Awards.
Since then, the singer has released several chart-topping hits and been honored with numerous accolades including a bronze statue in his hometown, a 2008 star-studded Latin Grammy tribute recorded in Miami and aired on Univision and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in California.
