Grammy Award-winning urban Latino funk band OZOMATLI to headline Fall for the Arts Festival at the Adrienne Arsht Center

The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, and the Adrienne Arsht Center, along with presenting sponsor the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, proudly announce that Grammy Award-winning urban Latino funk band OZOMATLI will headline the FALL FOR THE ARTS FESTIVAL.  Plus, more than 100 non-profit arts and community service organizations will participate in the FREE event transforming the Adrienne Arsht Center into Miami’s town square and creating an opportunity for the community to experience, enjoy, and engage with the best of Miami’s arts organizations and community service agencies.  On September 12, from 12 noon to 6 p.m., Miami is invited to come together to celebrate South Florida’s exciting new season of the arts.

FALL FOR THE ARTS FESTIVAL also includes more thrilling performances throughout the day on two stages; a stunning array of gourmet food vendors, curated by the Burger Beast; on-site workshops and seminars for the general public and for non-profit professionals; a ceremony honoring Adrienne Arsht Center volunteers with the prestigious Presidential Service Award; opportunities to volunteer and support local non-profit organizations; and family-friendly activities.  Coinciding with the festival, a star-studded selection of more than 50 shows will be on sale for the very first time, and available for purchase in person with no ticket fees!

OZOMATLI to perform plus, acclaimed local and national artists!

Celebrated Los Angeles urban Latino salsa-funk-dancehall-hip hop fusion band OZOMATLI has gained international recognition from audiences and critics alike, from Japan to Australia to Africa.  Founded over a decade ago by a multi-cultural crew from L.A., the members of OZOMATLI have risen from hometown heroes to U.S. State Department Cultural Ambassadors.  OZOMATLI has traveled the globe with a rousing stage show and infectious, celebratory music.  FALL FOR THE ARTS FESTIVAL will also feature additional performances all day long on two performance stages, showcasing the very best local and national performing artists, all reflecting the diverse arts and culture of Miami.

More than 100 local arts organizations to participate!

More than 100 local arts organizations will showcase their upcoming season of performances and highlight opportunities for community involvement at the festival.  Organizations will offer discount tickets, giveaways, and membership benefits to attendees.  Participating organizations include the Adrienne Arsht Center’s resident companies: the Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet, and New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy, as well as the following leading South Florida arts groups, including: Actors’ Playhouse, Arts and Business Council, Bass Museum, City Theatre, Classical South Florida, Culture Shock, Frost Art Museum, GableStage Theatre, The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, Lowe Art Museum, The Cleveland Orchestra, Mad Cat Theatre Company, Miami Beach Film Society, Miami Children’s Museum, Miami International Film Festival, Miami Light Project, Miami Lyric Opera, Museum of Contemporary Art, Seraphic Fire, The Playground Theatre, WLRN, WPBT, alongside countless other major contributors to the thriving Miami arts scene.

20 service organizations to be involved!

South Florida’s most active community service organizations will play a large role in the FALL FOR THE ARTS FESTIVAL, offering the community the unique opportunity to learn about a myriad of volunteer opportunities all in one place, at one time – encouraging South Florida to get engaged and get involved!  Each service organization will be on-hand to discuss their volunteer opportunities for the year, and highlight the many ways that community members can play a vital role in arts, non-profit, and service organizations.  Participating service organizations include: AARP, City Year, Miami Coalition for the Homeless, Miami Veterans Center, Ronald McDonald House, The Center on Non-profit Effectiveness, and many more.

The Adrienne Arsht Center and community partners will also present free workshops and seminars throughout the day, which include: “Feeling at Home in the House,” an accessible and fun review of theatrical terminology, customs, and culture; “Jobs in the Arts,” a discussion of the rewards and challenges of working in the non-profit arena; and several other workshops touching on arts and service.

Bring your appetite!

Attendees will get a taste of Miami’s burgeoning gourmet street food movement at the festival as more than 30 food vendors convene on 13th Street in a parade of scrumptious culinary treats for purchase, from burgers to tacos to ice cream.  Curated by Miami’s own Burger Beast, the delectable delicacies include: Latin Burger, gastropod, La Camaronera, Nacho Mama’s Mexican Grill, Michael’s Genuine Food Cart, Sakaya Kitchen, Swanky’s Low ‘n Slow BBQ, and many more!

Free children’s performances and  activities!

The festival will also highlight a wide array of family-friendly programming, including folkloric dance and music from Peru Expresión and participatory break-dancing led by the Flipside Kings.  Family-friendly activities for children and families will include all-day movement and acting workshops, face-painting and, in celebration of the September 16 opening of Pandemonium: The Lost and Found Orchestra, a special craft corner where kids will be able to make their own “Lost and Found” instruments!

First opportunity to purchase more than 50 shows with no fees!

As the community gathers to celebrate a new season, the Adrienne Arsht Center kicks off its Fifth Anniversary Season with a special ticket offer during FALL FOR THE ARTS FESTIVAL.  More than 50 new shows will go on sale on September 12, including Los Muñequitos de Matanzas; Flamenco Festival 2011; DrumLine Live; Beauty and the Beast; In the Heights; Forbidden Broadway; Whoopi Goldberg; Jerry Seinfeld; Joshua Bell; Michael Bolton; Boston Pops; Dianne Reeves; and Michael Feinstein.  The Adrienne Arsht Center box office will be open from 12 noon to 6 p.m.  All tickets purchased in person at the box office will not be subject to any processing fees. Public Transportation to The Adrienne Arsht Center

By Metrorail:

Take the Metrorail to Government Center and transfer to the Omni Loop Metromover headed toward the Performing Arts Center Station, located one block from the Center. New directional signage has been added aboard the trains, at the stations and street level.

By Metrobus:

The Omni Bus Terminal is served by 15 bus routes, including 3, 16, 32, 36, 48, 62, 95, A*, C, K, M, S, T, Biscayne MAX and Flagler MAX. *Enhanced Bus Service from South Beach Route A starts from Lincoln Road and Washington Avenue every 20 minutes throughout the evening and runs parallel to Lincoln Road by numerous parking lots along 17th Street westbound. The Route A crosses the Venetian Causeway and ends at the Omni Bus Terminal, located one block from the Center. Buses return to Miami Beach immediately after each performance, departing every 20 minutes until 11:40 p.m.

By Taxi:

Local taxis can drive you right up to the main entrances of Adrienne Arsht Center. Taxis can be found on Biscayne Boulevard after the event.
