WOMEN IN DISTRESS COMMEMORATES DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH 2011

Tuesday, October 4 at 6:30pm

Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. (WID) will host and participate in a series of local events to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month throughout October.   This nationally recognized month reminds our community and country about the realities of domestic violence.  Events this October will promote peace, healing, and responsibility in relationships. They will also give people a chance to reflect about a life lost, a family hurt, and a community impacted as a result of domestic violence.

“Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an important opportunity to promote awareness and prevention of domestic violence.  One in three women will be affected by domestic violence at some point in her lifetime – this devastating problem impacts women, men and children in Broward County every day,” says Mary Riedel, Women In Distress President and CEO. “This is the time to take a stand against family violence by participating in these events.”

To honor those who have lost their lives to domestic violence this year, WID will host the Annual Silent Witness Memorial on Tuesday, October 4 at 6:30pm at The ArtsPark at Young Circle in Hollywood. This free event, which is open to the public, will feature presentations from community leaders, domestic violence survivors, family members and others who are committed to ending domestic abuse in our community.

To close the month, over 1,200 community friends – including pets – will take a step against domestic violence at the Women In Distress 13th Annual SAFEWALK-RUN 5K presented by Pollo Tropical® at Markham Park in Sunrise.  The Coast 97.3FM “Those 2 Girls In The Morning” Tamara G. and Julie Guy, as well as Celebrity Guests the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders will kick things off at 7:30 AM!

Other highlighted events include: the Silent Witness exhibit which displays life-size silhouettes at various locations throughout Broward County all month, representing victims of domestic violence from the past year whose lives were lost;  a sale at the Women In Distress Thrift Store on Oct. 1st to kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month (1372 N. State Road 7, on 441 between Copans Road and Coconut Creek Pkwy in Margate, FL); and the Clothesline Project at the Westfield Broward Mall on Oct. 15th at which the public is invited to decorate t-shirts with nonviolent and empowering messages.
