November 1; 8 PM
The New World Dance Ensemble will present an exciting program of dances by some of today’s most remarkable choreographers including Ohad Naharin (recent Artistic Director of Tel Aviv’s renowned Batsheva Dance Company), Robert Battle (NWSA alumnus, Artistic Director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre Company), Jessica Lang (Artistic Director, Jessica Lang Dance), and Eduardo Vilaro (Artistic Director, Ballet Hispanico Dance Company). Naharin’s work (excerpts from Secus and Seder) is an evocative contemporary work that reveals extremes of both individuality in movement expression as well as group cohesion and uniformity; Robert Battle’s powerful work, Boxed, is set to a driving contemporary score by Robbie Kinter and Rattlemouth; Jessica Lang’s contemporary ballet, Oblivion, set to a lush tango by Astor Piazzola is lyrical and passionate; Gerard Ebitz’ work, Mourning Light is a beautiful and romantic contemporary ballet en pointe embodying the score by Johann Johannsson; Lara Murphy’s powerful work, At the Seams, for five women en pointe is virtuosic and evocative; and finally Eduardo Vilaro’s new work, Chance of Thunder, set to music by Juan Garcia Esquivel, brings us into the up-beat social dance scene of fifties-era teens.
