The Wellness Community Golf & Tennis Fundraiser Raised $90,000

The Wellness Community-Greater Miami held their 7th Annual “Tee off Fore Wellness” Golf Classic presented by the Thea Cup Challenge at Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club on October 19, 2009. The event raised about $90,000 to benefit the Wellness Community-Greater Miami. This signature event at the beautiful Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club was a huge success for the Wellness Community said Cindy Eckhart, Development Director. We doubled what we profited last year. The golf tournament was a sell out with 144 players and also our Inaugural Tennis tournament was a sell-out. We had perfect 67 degrees weather and a wonderful afternoon of golf . Guests were greeted by Megan Clementi, Miss Florida USA as she signed autographs and had her picture taken with all the players along with autographs and pictures with Heat Player Glenn Rice who also golfed in our golf tournament.

Through our generous donors along with sponsorships, underwriters and contributions, we were able to surpass our fundraising expectations. Their support along with our presenting Sponsor Phil Follins helped contribute to our most successful tournament in The Wellness Community-Greater Miami’s history.

Following the tournament, tennis players, golfers and guests celebrated at a special dinner mc’d by the commissioner of Coral Gables, Bill Kerdyk following an awards ceremony and a silent and live auction with our very own Jay Rokeach from University of Miami as our live auctioneer. The Bacardi group was awarded first place and the awards went to Eric Guanche, Ted Love, Lee Lyon and Mike Palma.

The Thea Cup is held in honor of Thea Woods Follins who passed away from breast cancer two years ago. The mission of The Wellness Community is to help people affected by cancer enhance their health and well-being. They participate in professional programs for emotional support, education and support. Thea’s name is synonymous with those of all people fighting for recovery. The Wellness Community has helped fight this battle for over two decades, by providing free psychological and emotional resources to people in all stages of the disease.
