Students at Gulliver Academy in Coral Gables Learn How Pennies Can Pay For Lifesaving Cancer Research – Top fundraising school two years in a row

Students at Gulliver Academy proudly participated in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Pennies for Patients program, one of LLS’s national School & YouthSM Programs that raises money to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma while providing information and support services to patients and their families.

Pennies for Patients teaches students caring, sharing, respect for others and the value of community service, in addition to supporting an important cause. The need for cures is critical: nearly 912,900 Americans are battling blood cancers, and leukemia remains the leading cause of disease-related death among children under 20.

The  students at Gulliver Academy ran the Pennies for Patients program during Kindness Week  and  raised over $7,600 to help LLS advance its mission to find cures. For two years in a row, Gulliver has been the top school in funds raised in South Florida.   “This was a great experience for our students,” said Jerry Zank, school principal at Gulliver Academy. “It taught them that they can make an important difference in the lives of others. It is gratifying that our students’ efforts are benefiting an outstanding organization like LLS.”

During the 2009-2010 school year, 25,000 schools across the country raised $19 million through School & Youth Programs.

“It was so inspiring to see the Gulliver Academy students volunteer and really care about helping others,” said Joanne Davis, executive director of LLS’ Southern Florida Chapter. It’s a program that is truly meaningful for them because leukemia is a disease that impacts children, and the students learn that they can really make a difference.”
