Sagamore Hotel to celebrate acclaimed artist Enrique Martínez Celaya during Art Basel 2011

Enrique Martínez Celaya will be the guest of honor at an invitation-only event hosted by Cricket and Martin Taplin, owners of The Sagamore Hotel, on Wednesday, November 30th in celebration of the U.S. debut of the artist’s critically acclaimed installation entitled Schneebett, now on view at the Miami Art Museum.

During the VIP event, guests will have the exclusive opportunity to view the world premiere of The Master, Martínez Celaya’s visually arresting and thought-provoking video motivated by and created on the occasion of Schneebett at the Miami Art Museum, a work which conveys Ludwig van Beethoven’s final moments of illness and subsequent death in Vienna while in exile from his native Bonn.

The Master features the artist impersonating the eighteenth century composer, dressed in period costume pacing the seashore at dawn with the artist’s hesitant and repetitive gestures taking place against the backdrop of the beautiful yet relentlessly rising sun and crashing waves.  The Master will be projected over the Sagamore Hotel pool and serve as the stunning focus for the evening’s celebration.

Since being singled-out early in his career by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for its prestigious Young Talent Award, Enrique Martínez Celaya has become one of the world’s most celebrated and sought-after artists. His work is represented in twenty-seven museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig.  His paintings and sculpture environments are characterized by a profound poetic sensibility and an insatiable curiosity for nature that reflect his lifelong passion for poetry and science.  Trained as a physicist before pursuing art, he owns an often-cited patent for his research on superconductivity, lasers, and laser delivery systems and his work. Martínez Celaya has lectured throughout the world and his writings and essays have appeared in many publications.
