PULSE 2.0: Late Night at the New World Symphony returns! With spine-chilling vocals from mezzo-soprano Irene Roberts, beats by DJ Sean Drake and notes on the program courtesy of Pitchfork contributing editor Jayson Greene, this event is the perfect mix of classical and contemporary.

Roberts, who also makes her debut on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera this season, will be singing “Somewhere” from Leonard Bernstein’s classic West Side Story. Additionally, the northern-California native will perform a work from Joseph Cantaloube’s  Songs of the Auvergne in  Occitan, the nearly-extinct language native to Southern France and Italy’s Occitan valleys.

Other exciting selections include Christopher Rouse’s  Ogoun Badagris, a percussion piece that Greene describes as “a performance meant to appease the fearsome Voodoo deity Ougon Badagris. You have to fight fire with fire, metaphorically speaking, and it takes a nasty, formidable piece of music to soothe an angry and vengeful deity.”PULSE 2.0

At the end of the night, don’t miss “Pulse Unplugged,” a 15-minute mini-set performed in the intimate SunTrust Pavilion and the all-out dance set in the main performance hall.

  • A percussion work written to appease a fearsome Voodoo deity, one who can only be satisfied with human sacrifice.
  • An orchestral work inspired by a short ride in a very fast car, in which you are the passenger and the driver is messing with your comfort level.
  • A work you’ll recognize when you hear it, from the classic West Side Story.
  • A composer that inspired electronic and experimental rock movements, including groups like The Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth.
