The Wolfsonian–FIU

One man spent decades collecting the objects that shaped the modern world — propaganda posters, Art Deco furniture, industrial design, utopian architecture. Then he gave it all to FIU.

Mitchell Wolfson Jr. spent decades and a considerable fortune collecting objects from the period 1885 to 1945 — the era when design, propaganda, and mass production converged to reshape human civilization. His collection of over 120,000 objects includes Art Deco furniture, WPA posters, Fascist propaganda, Soviet constructivist graphics, industrial design prototypes, and utopian architectural models. He donated it all to Florida International University.

The building itself is a 1927 Mediterranean Revival storage warehouse that Wolfson converted into a museum. The collection is housed in a building that is itself a historical artifact.

The Wolfsonian is one of the most intellectually serious museums in Miami — and one of the least visited by tourists, which makes it a genuine insider destination. The permanent collection is organized thematically around how objects embody ideology. A Nazi-era kitchen appliance and a Soviet propaganda poster end up in the same conversation. It is unsettling in the best possible way.
