Stiltsville
Seven houses on stilts in the middle of Biscayne Bay. No roads, no utilities, no explanation.
In the 1930s, a man named Crawfish Eddie Walker built a shack on stilts in the middle of Biscayne Bay and started selling bait and beer. Others followed. By the 1960s, there were 27 structures out there — a floating neighborhood with no address, no utilities, and no zoning enforcement. Hurricanes took most of them. Seven remain.
The structures are managed by the National Park Service and can only be reached by boat. Biscayne National Park runs occasional tours. Private boat rentals from Coconut Grove or Key Biscayne get you there in about 20 minutes.
The Stiltsville Trust maintains the buildings for community use. You can rent them for events — which means you can, technically, throw a dinner party in the middle of Biscayne Bay with no land in sight.
