Coral Castle

One Latvian man spent 28 years carving a castle out of coral rock using tools no one has ever identified. He did it alone, at night, and never explained how.

Ed Leedskalnin was 26 when his fiancée left him the day before their wedding. He spent the next three decades building her a castle out of coral rock — 1,100 tons of it, carved and moved by one man working alone, mostly at night. The largest single piece weighs 30 tons. No one saw him move it. No one knows how he did it.

Concierge Tip

Coral Castle is open daily at 28655 S Dixie Hwy in Homestead. Admission is $18 for adults. The audio tour is worth it — the guides are genuinely invested in the mystery. Combine it with a drive through Homestead's farm stands for a full afternoon.

Leedskalnin died in 1951 without explaining his methods. Engineers have studied the site for decades. The best theory involves a tripod, a chain hoist, and extraordinary patience. The more interesting theory is that he figured out something about leverage and counterweight that no one else has bothered to replicate.
