The African Queen

The actual boat from the 1951 Humphrey Bogart film. It lives in Key Largo. You can take a cruise on it.

The African Queen was built in 1912 in England and used on Lake Albert in Uganda. In 1951, it was used in the John Huston film of the same name, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. After the film, the boat was brought to the United States and eventually ended up in Key Largo, where it has been operating as a tourist attraction since the 1980s.

Concierge Tip

The African Queen is docked at the Holiday Inn Key Largo Resort at MM 100. Canal cruises run daily — 30-minute tours on the actual boat from the actual film. Dinner cruises are also available. The boat is in excellent condition and still runs on its original steam engine.

The boat is small — 30 feet long, with a single-cylinder steam engine that sounds exactly like it does in the film. The canal cruise takes you through the mangroves behind Key Largo. The captain knows the boat's history in detail. It is a genuinely strange and wonderful thing to do on a Tuesday afternoon in the Keys.
