MIAMI-DADE COUNTY HOMELESS TRUST TO MARK NATIONAL “HOMELESS PERSONS’ MEMORIAL DAY” WITH CANDLELIGHT VIGIL on FRIDAY, DEC 17th

On Friday, December 17, 2010, Miami-Dade County will join over 100 communities nationwide in commemorating “National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day,” with a candlelight vigil and memorial service. The service and vigil will be held at the Stephen P. Clark Building in Downtown Miami and will include the reading of the names of those homeless and formerly homeless people who passed away in Miami-Dade County over the past 12 months.

“This memorial service honors those homeless people who have passed on in our community, the least, the last and the lost, but certainly not the forgotten,” said Ronald L. Book, Chair of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, “The number of people living on the streets of our community is at its lowest point ever and our numbers continue to decline. On this day we recommit ourselves to ending homelessness in Miami-Dade County.”

National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day has been sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless since 1990 on or near the first day of winter to bring attention to the tragedy of homelessness, and to remember our homeless friends who have passed away on the streets of our community this year.

The memorial service is being jointly coordinated by the Homeless/Formerly Homeless Forum, Inc., a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization that was established in 1993 to promote solutions to the problems facing families and individuals living on the streets of Miami-Dade County, the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, which is the agency responsible for implementing the “continuum of care” system of homeless housing and services in the community and the Miami Coalition for the Homeless, Inc., a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization founded in 1984 to promote community efforts to prevent and end homelessness in South Florida
