PROGRAM ONE
Miami City Ballet opens their 2019/20 Season in October with a bang! The first program for the season includes three vibrant works including Balanchine’s own favorite ballet, Stravinsky Violin Concerto; a do-not-miss work by iconic choreographer Paul Taylor, Mercuric Tidings; and the celebrated stage spectacle set in a 1930s speakeasy, Slaughter on Tenth Avenue – a ballet with vaudevillian soul and a recognizable, toe-tapping score.

STRAVINSKY VIOLIN CONCERTO
Choreography: George Balanchine © The George Balanchine Trust
Music: Igor Stravinsky

Stravinsky’s music provided the perfect platform for Balanchine to push his stylistic experiments. This is all-out dancing and expression with pure technique.

MERCURIC TIDINGS
Choreography: Paul Taylor
Music: Franz Schubert

In tribute to the late Paul Taylor, Miami City Ballet performs this celebration of “body in motion” in this “exhilarating, blisteringly fast dance.” (Miami Herald)

SLAUGHTER ON TENTH AVENUE
Choreography: George Balanchine © The George Balanchine Trust
Music: Richard Rodgers

Balanchine’s sassy and spirited Slaughter on Tenth Avenue and Richard Rodgers’ tantalizing Broadway score open the season with a bang in a 1930s speakeasy. It’s a hilarious parody of hijinks and high kicks, gangsters and cops, in this ballet about the tap dancer and the impossible stripper he falls in love with. But watch out – her jealous boyfriend is the brutal Big Boss, and he’s hiding in the theater waiting for the moment to pull the trigger on the hoofer… will the police nab him in time?

Spread the love!
