Lecture – Friends or Rivals?Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, and the Genesis of the Bass “Coronation”

The Bass Museum’s Coronation of the Virgin is the only recorded collaborative panel painting by Sandro Botticelli and Domenico Ghirlandaio, two of fifteenth- century Italy’s most sought after creators of religious imagery. The work is a testament to Botticelli’s excellence in the portrayal of beautiful figures, and Ghirlandaio’s mastery at recording individual character. This talk will present the Bass Coronation within the context of Renaissance rivalry.Richard Aste is Associate Curator of European Art at Museo de Arte de Ponce (MAP), where he has curated numerous exhibitions ranging from European Old Master Paintings to Rodin and the French Impressionists. Prior to moving to Puerto Rico, Richard served as a lecturer of art history at Hunter College in New York City and an Old Master Paintings and Drawings specialist at Christie’s.
