With acclaimed Kaua`i abstract painter, Tom Lieber, and one of America’s most beloved contemporary artists William T. Wiley on board, g a l e r i e  1 0 3  is making a maiden voyage from the Kauai`s South Shore all the way to the South Eastern art mecca, Art Basel Miami 2010.

From December 2nd to December 5th, g a l e r i e  1 0 3  will set up camp at famed art hotel Sagamore in the heart of Miami Beach.

This will be the first international art scene appearance for  g a l e r i e  1 0 3  and Kaua`i,  and a great opportunity to expand general awareness  and to correct any lingering idea that the contemporary Hawaiian art scene is “merely” focused on the celebration of natural beauty.

William Wiley Dont Be Afraid , Lt/ed 40, 2009, archival pigment print with handwork, 16 1/2 x 20 /12 inches This limited edition of 40 prints created for galerie 103 is based on an original watercolor made by Wiley in the summer of 2009. The artist has used the blackboard motif at the heart of the print since 1971, when he was teaching at The University of California Davis. These pieces look like old-timey school slates and contain instructions, homilies and folk wisdom. As is often the case in Wiley? slate pieces, the recurring figure of the hourglass, ?uster Time, stands front and center here, reminding us that time flies. The hourglass image is hand-drawn on the archival pigment print on rag paper. The paint on the palette is hand-applied, making each piece a unique original.

Alongside Lieber and Wiley, there will be exhibited works by Chicago veteran Peter Bodnar and a series of lithographs by H.C. Westermann (1922-1981), American print

maker and sculptor whose art constituted a scathing commentary on  militarism and materialism.

Hawaii has become (as it should be) one of the centers of conceptual awareness and critical debate of many matters shaping human destiny, including global environmental issues. Kauai`s own Doug Britt, Mac James, and Bruna Stude examine these issues through their various  media on view during Art Basel events.

Doug Britt Untitled, 1982, acrylic on canvas, 48 x 48 inches Doug Britt' work has always been reactionary to what’s happening in the world. While the island of Kauai remains overrun by wild roosters crowing day and night as it was decades ago, in context of today's social, political, economic issues, and environmental degradation, Britt's iconic image of a rooster created in the early eighties remains current and relevant, maybe even more today the ever before.

Also featured will be the works of Kaua`i underexposed talent, like eighty-nine year old collage master Kathleen Adair Brown, and a number of Hawaii based artists which the gallery represents.  Selections reflect the Island’s unique environment; past and present, challenging  misconceptions about Hawaii’s regionalism and ethnic origin.

In her article, “Amorous of Island Art”, Jaimey Hamilton, Art Writer, and Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Hawai`i in Manoa, remarks on how Poipu`s

g a l e r i e   1 0 3  rises above the stereotypical “tourist” art galleries that seem to proliferate in the islands:

“How? By conceiving of a space that combines the best of local talent with international artists in spare, smart shows that challenge the notion of regionalism that has preoccupied Hawai`i artists, gallerists and collectors for so long. In opening a world-class gallery on the south shore of Kaua`i, Stude proves that instead of endlessly comparing ourselves to other art centers, the Hawai`i arts community can simply take pride in the fact that we are part of a vibrant global art culture that internationally important art can and does happen here.
