JAZZ ROOTS: SUPER SAX – FEATURING GLOBE-TROTTING SAXOPHONE SUPERSTARS MACEO PARKER AND CANDY DULFER – DECEMBER 14

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and Larry Rosen, together with presenting sponsor TotalBank, present JAZZ ROOTS: A Larry Rosen Jazz Series – SUPER SAX on December 14, 2012 in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall of the Adrienne Arsht Center. Two of today’s reigning saxophonists — MACEO PARKER and CANDY DULFER —  bring their unique blend of crowd-pleasing jazz, funk, R&B, soul and hip-hop to Miami for a show that is guaranteed to get fans of jazz and dance music up and moving. Headlining the concert is sax master and consummate showman MACEO PARKER — one of the early pioneers of modern funk and hip-hop. The program will open with the Grammy-nominated CANDY DULFER, whose solo debut album Saxualitysold more than a million copies worldwide.

Tickets range from $25 to $130* and may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722 or online at www.arshtcenter.org.

“The Knight Concert Hall will be filled with funky vibes and infectious grooves when the great sonic architect of funk Maceo Parker – who first became a legend for his work with James Brown — and the sensational alto sax star Candy Dulfer — who made her name in the pop music world as a soloist for major stars — take the stage of our Knight Concert Hall” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center.

Since he climbed on board the James Brown funky soul train, MACEO PARKER has become recognized as one of the early pioneers of modern funk and hip-hop. More recently, he has been enjoying a phenomenal solo career and building a new funk empire that is fresh and stylistically diverse as he navigates deftly between James Brown’s 1960s soul and George Clinton’s 1970s funk while exploring jazz and hip-hop.

Saxophonist CANDY DULFER has performed with such notable artists as Aretha Franklin, Marcus Miller, and Chaka Khan, as well as her own band, Funky Stuff, which has opened for Madonna. DULFER was brought into the limelight by Prince, who introduced her to the world at the age of 19 via his video for “Partyman.” In 2004, she joined Prince for the Musicology Tour, playing over 90 shows in sell-out arenas across the United States. Her most recent recording, Crazy, was released in 2011. Additional U.S. concert dates this fall include the B.B. King Club in New York and the Smith Center in Las Vegas as part of the JAZZ ROOTS series.

The JAZZ ROOTS series originated at the Arsht Center in Miami and is now presented at major performing arts centers in five U.S. cities. JAZZ ROOTS also features an in-depth educational partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools which has brought approximately 4,000 high school music students to the Center for a complimentary and unique behind-the-scenes experience including: a pre-concert sound check; a Q&A session with featured artists followed by a workshop with a local jazz expert that will highlight the music, the artistic process and the practical skills needed for a career in the arts; and free entry to the evening’s performance. The Jazz Roots education program is made possible in part by a grant from the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers and the Jazz Roots Encore Circle.

JAZZ ROOTS: A Larry Rosen Jazz Series is presented by TotalBank, a subsidiary of Banco Popular Espanol, S.A.; WPBT Channel 2, WLRN 91.3 FM are media sponsors of JAZZ ROOTS. The JAZZ ROOTS series is also sponsored in part by Steinway & Sons, the official piano of the Adrienne Arsht Center.
