International Stars Open Florida Grand Opera’s 2023–24 Season with ‘La Traviata’

WHY: Florida Grand Opera’s 82nd Season opens with a brilliant cast of seasoned international stars and one of Giuseppe Verdi’s most beautiful and popular scores, a favorite of South Florida audiences.

Florida Grand Opera (FGO) is set to enchant South Florida audiences with their season opener, Giuseppe Verdi’s classic opera “La Traviata”. Promising grand opera and grand singing, the production will feature a stellar international cast, including renowned soprano Cecilia Violetta López, tenor Pavel Patrov, and baritone Troy Cook.

“La Traviata” tells the tragic love story of Violetta Valéry, a Parisian courtesan, and Alfredo Germont, a wealthy young man. Set in 19th century Paris, the opera follows their passionate yet doomed romance as they navigate societal pressures and personal sacrifices. With its timeless melodies and emotional depth, “La Traviata” remains one of Verdi’s most beloved works.

Mexican-American soprano Cecilia Violetta López returns to Florida Grand Opera in her signature role as Violetta. Known for her captivating performances, López has garnered acclaim both in the United States and internationally. Her portrayal of Violetta showcases her exceptional vocal range and dramatic talent.

Making his American debut, Belarusian tenor Pavel Patrov takes on the role of Alfredo Germont. With his powerful voice and commanding stage presence, Patrov has earned accolades for his performances across Europe. His portrayal of Alfredo promises to be a highlight of the production.

Baritone Troy Cook, a former Florida Grand Opera Studio Artist, returns to the company in the role of Giorgio Germont, Alfredo’s father. Cook’s elegant vocal style and stage charisma have made him a sought-after performer in opera houses worldwide. His interpretation of Giorgio Germont is sure to captivate audiences.

Completing the cast are a dynamic mix of guests and Florida Grand Opera Studio Artists, including South Florida baritone José Vazquez as the Marquis D’Obigny. The production is directed by Ecuadoran stage director and composer Chía Patiño, making his FGO debut, while conductor Joe Illick returns to the podium after almost three decades.
