Innovative Duo Hettler.Tüllmann Brings Sustainable Design to Miami Art Week

Jula Tüllman and Katja Hettler

As Miami Art Week approaches, the design duo Hettler.Tüllmann is set to make a splash with four exciting exhibitions throughout the city. Jula Tüllman and Katja Hettler, who operate studios in both Miami and Berlin, are renowned for their unique blend of global inspiration, ethical craftsmanship, and classic elegance. Their works will feature prominently at the Wolfsonian Museum, Design Miami, Untitled Art Miami Beach, and Collective 62 from December 1 to December 8, 2024.

In Balance at the Wolfsonian Museum
Kicking off the week, Hettler.Tüllmann will unveil In Balance, an installation running from November 21, 2024, to January 19, 2025, at the historic Bridge Tender House within the Wolfsonian Museum. This striking art piece features a suspended swing chair set among a lush array of bromeliads, drawing inspiration from the Art Deco motifs found in the museum’s collection as well as South Florida’s native flora. The installation symbolizes the delicate equilibrium of natural ecosystems, reminding viewers of the potential imbalances that can arise with human intervention.

Design Miami Exhibition
From December 3 to 8, Hettler.Tüllmann will showcase its innovative furniture designs at Mindy Solomon Gallery’s booth G20 during Design Miami. Among the highlights are tables and chairs crafted from organic and recycled materials, including the Play table made from baked mycelium, and the Shells coffee table, which is entirely biodegradable and constructed using egg and nut shells. Additionally, the Puli and Puli Lounger pieces take inspiration from the Shaker tradition of utilitarian design, utilizing recycled cotton textiles sourced from household mops.

Untitled Art Miami Beach Installations
At Untitled Art Miami Beach from December 3 to 8, Hettler.Tüllmann will present installations at Special Projects areas SP9 and SP11. In SP9, visitors can find four woven chairs from the studio’s Okoma collection, which are created in collaboration with Malawian artisans from the social enterprise People of the Sun. Also on display will be the Fred and Jacob woven chairs, developed with the German basketmaker Flechtwerk Berlin, alongside the whimsical Puli Chair. In SP11, the Nest installation features six basket-like seats, also made in partnership with People of the Sun, arranged in a charming “loveseat” configuration reminiscent of 19th-century design.

Collective 62 Group Exhibition
On December 1, 2024, Hettler.Tüllmann will participate in a group exhibition at Collective 62, an artist-run space dedicated to supporting women in various creative fields, located in Liberty City. Curated by Michelle Weinstein, the exhibition will showcase a unique wall piece designed for the ongoing Miami Maps Project. This installation features a crocheted map of one of Miami’s neighborhoods, crafted from “plarn,” a plastic yarn made from recycled shopping bags, in collaboration with the Miami-based Helping Hands Crochet Club.
