Berlin- and Miami-based design duo Hettler.Tüllmann debuted their latest installation, IN BALANCE, which has taken root at the Wolfsonian’s Bridge Tender House. This captivating installation first bloomed to life amid the iconic stainless-steel Art Deco hexagonal structures that once graced the Miami River before being relocated to South Beach, adjacent to the museum.
IN BALANCE creatively engages with its environment, exploring the complex relationship between human activity and nature. The designers, Katja Hettler and Jula Tullman, have ingeniously crafted a metaphorical garden that features their signature Swing chair suspended in equilibrium with a cluster of vibrant bromeliads. This mobile installation draws inspiration from both the Art Deco motifs in the museum’s collection and the lush native plant life of South Florida.
The design ingeniously communicates a poignant message: should one attempt to sit on the Swing, the delicate balance would shatter, serving as a metaphor for the fragile stability of natural ecosystems in the presence of human intervention.
This exhibition marks the inaugural showing of Hettler.Tüllmann’s four installations around Miami this year, celebrating their 20th anniversary of collaboration and creativity. Their significant presence during Miami Art Week also includes showcases at Design Miami, Untitled, and Collective 62.
