In Search Of Memory At Cosford Cinema
“Memory is everything. Without it we are nothing,” says neuroscientist Eric Kandel, winner of the Nobel Prize for his groundbreaking research on the physiology of the brain’s storage of memories. This blend of autobiography and history recounts the life of one of the most important neuroscientists of the 20th century and illuminates our understanding of the brain’s role in recording and preserving memory. In addition to archival footage and re-creations of Kandel’s childhood experiences in Nazi-occupied Vienna and his formative years as an emigrant in New York, the film features discussions with Kandel, friends and family, as well as his public lectures in Vienna and New York. In revisiting the people, places and objects of Kandel’s experiences, the film reveals how everything we undergo changes the brain, even our genetic make-up, and can determine the focus of a life’s work. The film begins at 5pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. $8, ($6 seniors) cash only. Treehouse Wine Tasting: Great Picks From Spain
Join your friends at Treehouse Wine And Spirits from 5 to 7pm as they celebrate their first wine tasting at their new location at 233 Aragon featuring two superb wines from Spain. There will be a $10 tasting fee, which affords your choice of $5 off any purchase made that evening or 1 Riedel Wine glass. First, a 2005 Viticultors del Priorat Vega Escal; 90+ points by Robert Parker (early) $24.99. The 2005 Vega Escal is a blend of 60% Carinena, 30% Garnacha, and 10% Syrah aged for six months in French and American oak. Deep crimson-colored, it offers up a spicy bouquet of cedar, mineral, plum, black cherry, and blueberry. This leads to a smooth-textured, layered wine with enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years. This lengthy effort will drink well from 2010 to 2018. Also, 2007 Bodegas Y Vinedos Maurodos Prima; 90 points by Robert Parker (young) $20.99. The 2007 Prima is a blend of 90% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) and 10% Garnacha aged for 12 months in seasoned French and American oak prior to bottling without filtration. With a glass-coating opaque purple color, it reveals an expressive nose of smoke, pencil lead, tobacco, spice box, black cherry, and blackberry. Supple and round on the palate, it has layers of ripe fruit, savory flavors, and enough soft tannin to improve for another 3-5 years. This lengthy effort will have a drinking window extending from 2012 to 2025. In short, it is a serious example of Toro at a nearly frivolous price.
