Great Gables Events – weekend of June 25

Greetings,

Summer is officially here now, but you wouldn’t know it by the change of seasons. We went from cool weather to hot back in May and there’s plenty more to come. Spring? I think Spring took a holiday this year.

If you find a cool breeze and a shady spot, it’s not too bad. Remember, Venetian Pool is cool and refreshing with 75 degree water that reinvigorates the body on the hottest days. Instantly.

Here’s more than a few interesting items to keep you active and engaged in the coming days before the July 4th weekend.

The Secret In Their Eyes At Cosford Cinema
Academy Award Winner for Best Foreign Language Film. Benjamín is a former criminal court employee who wants to write a novel about an Argentine case from the 1970s in which a woman was raped and murdered. He confides his intentions to a judge with whom he’s been secretly smitten for years, Irene, but she expresses reservations about the idea. Meanwhile, flashbacks set up the central story, unfolding in 1970s Argentina. In that narrative, Argentina has fallen under the control of a military junta and a fair trial has become an increasingly uncommon event. A woman is found raped and murdered while her husband was at work, and two immigrant workers are essentially forced into confessing to the crime. Benjamín then teams up with his colleague and friend Pablo Sandoval, and the two go about identifying and tagging the perpetrator of the original crime. A detail in a photograph alerts Benjamin to the possibility that a man named Gómez may have been the real culprit, but finding Gómez is no simple task. Moreover, as Benjamín and Pablo struggle to have the case reopened, they also find that bureaucracy and power in Argentine government have made this close to impossible. The film begins at 9pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. $8, ($6 seniors) cash only. Call 305-284-4861. http://www.cosfordcinema.com

Miguel A. Bretos: Matanzas
Matanzas — the name means literally slaughters — is the Cuban city nearest the United States. Known at the heyday of the nineteenth-century sugar boom as the Athens of Cuba, it is renowned for its art, its music, and its rich African heritage. It is also the place where Latin American baseball began. Yet most Americans have never heard of it. Miguel Bretos’ fascinating history of his hometown, Matanzas: The Cuba Nobody Knows (University of Florida Press, $27.50) remedies this oversight. Branko gives him a down payment, and Robert goes to Belgrade and moves in with Branko’s mother, Olga (Mirjana Karanovic). Iron Chef Cat Cora At Books And Books
On the wildly popular show Iron Chef America, Cat Cora uses her instincts to transform random ingredients into exciting creations on a moment’s notice. In Cat Cora’s Classics with a Twist (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $30), she turns her eye to some of our most popular dishes to make them faster, fresher, and lighter. These are the swift meals that Cat relies on when she comes home from work to cook for her own family: Greek-Style Nachos, Grilled Chili-Lime Flank Steak Soft Tacos, Crispy Baked Fish Stix with Mustard Dipping Sauce, Quick Chicken Curry with Peas, and Sour-Cherry-Filled Chocolate Cupcakes. In dishes like Baked “Fried” Calamari with Marinara Dipping Sauce and Tex-Mex Tuna Casserole, Cat puts a new spin on old favorites. She updates others, tossing chipotle-spiced croutons into a Caesar salad, or replacing the usual beef in stroganoff with chicken and adding fresh tarragon. Each recipe illustrates Cat’s motto: Just because a dish is a classic, that doesn’t mean it can’t be improved upon. Meet the iron chef author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. In his first novel, Brando Skyhorse gives voice to the Mexican-American community in Echo Park, California: “We slipped into this country like thieves, onto the land that once was ours.” With these words, spoken by an illegal Mexican day laborer, The Madonnas of Echo Park (Free Press, $23) takes us into the unseen world of Los Angeles, following the men and women who cook the meals, clean the homes, and struggle to lose their ethnic identity in the pursuit of the American dream. When a dozen or so girls and mothers gather on an Echo Park street corner to act out a scene from a Madonna music video, they find themselves caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting. In the aftermath, Aurora Esperanza grows distant from her mother, Felicia, who as a housekeeper in the Hollywood Hills establishes a unique relationship with a detached housewife.
