Free Gospel Sundays: Lisa Knowles Smith & The Brown Singers

Free Gospel Sundays: Lisa Knowles Smith & The Brown Singers

Sunday, February 23
KNIGHT CONCERT HALL

Female gospel quartet, the Brown Singers, were formed in Memphis, Tennessee in the late ’70s by Willie Mae Richmond (whose maiden name was Brown). The group quickly garnered a following for their beautiful and energetic vocal performances. Richmond’s granddaughter, Lisa Knowles-Smith, joined the quartet when she was nine years old, and by the time she turned 12, she was the lead singer. The Knowles-Smith led version of the quartet performed with the same flair and soulful sound as the original group, but added more of a modern and contemporary flavor to the mix. The group’s debut national album, Experience the Evolution – Live, was released in 2008, and was nominated for 2 Stellar Awards.

In 2014, The Brown Singers released their second national project entitled The Evolution Continues, debuting #6 on the Gospel Billboard charts. In 2015, the group won 2 Stellar Awards for Quartet of The Year and Traditional Group/Duo of The Year.

Following the group’s wins, Lisa Knowles-Smith stepped out on faith and started her own record label “EvoWorld Music Group, LLC”. The group’s third nation album, Evolution: The Legacy, which was also produced by Lisa, was released under the label in 2016. Lisa Knowles Smith & The Brown Singers

In 2016, after 40 years of singing, The Brown Singers decided to shift focus from celebrating their Homecoming Weekend to using the platform they gained over the years to support Lisa’s mom, Vanessa, who is a Breast Cancer Survivor and the only original Brown Singer still with the group. They launched Survivor Fest and all proceeds are used to bless people who are actively battling cancer.
