Flattening the Surge of Violence Against Women and Children: COVID-19 and Beyond Immediate and Longer Term Policy Responses

Flattening the Surge of Violence Against Women and Children: COVID-19 and Beyond Immediate and Longer Term Policy Responses

Oct 20, 2020 09:00 AM

Violence against women and children was, is and will sadly continue to be, a pandemic long after COVID-19 recedes. “Lockdown” and “shelter-in-place” orders and the disruptions in access to support services, combined with rising unemployment and poverty have put women and young people at increased risk, layering one pandemic onto another. In this webinar – the first in a series being hosted by the Lancet Commission on Gender-based Violence and Maltreatment of Young People with the University of Miami — speakers will discuss innovative policy measures that have emerged as a response to COVID-19, and recommendations for policy and governance measures to protect, support and empower women and children. In line with the goal of “build back better,” this webinar will focus on strengthening health systems and global health governance including integrating a gender lens into preparedness planning to ensure that mitigating violence is not an afterthought in future emergencies.
