Firefighter union Local 1673 will sponsor charity activities around the Pink Heals Tour 2010

Four fire trucks painted in pink will arrive Sept. 20 in Deerfield Beach to draw attention to and help raise money for the fight against cancer.

Pink will be the color of the day, with members of Local 1673 of the International Association of Fire Fighters shedding their usual blue shirts for a rosy hue to show they stand behind women and men battling the disease. They invite every woman, man and child to do the same that day to help create a sea of pink.

“This event is something to bring cancer awareness to the forefront,” says Sean Crofutt, president of IAFF Local 1673.

The pink fire trucks, traveling the nation to spread cancer awareness, will be manned by professional firefighters in pink gear who call themselves the Guardians of the Ribbon.

Women who have been affected by breast cancer are invited to sign the trucks, which started their journey in August from Colorado.

“In the end it’s about every type of cancer, and if we can get the word out and save even one person, then it’s worth it,” Crofutt says.

Events will be free for the general public. They include an evening beach concert, truck signing, tours at public and private schools, a beach candle lighting ceremony and a poster contest for school students.

The union invites civic organizations and businesses to get involved by joining them in making the events a success.

Money raised will be donated to local organizations that fight breast cancer, including the Sylvester Cancer Center in Deerfield Beach and Boca Hospital’s Eugene M. and & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute. Money will be set aside to pay for mammograms for uninsured women.
