“The notable similarities in the skylines of Dubai, Miami, and Singapore are no coincidence because, despite following very different historical paths, all three have achieved newfound prominence in global trade, finance, and culture. This book traces the transformation of these cities from very peripheral places to their present role in the world economy identifying the common features that they share as well as their differences.

The book also considers cities that aspired to a similar role in the world system but which, for one reason or another, did not achieve it. The history of these “global hopefuls” rounds up the analysis of the role of cities under contemporary capitalism.”
