Jackson Memorial Foundation celebrated the $2 million renovation of the pathology laboratories at Jackson Memorial Hospital, with its completion and dedication Wednesday, May 18, in a ceremony at the hospital, said Foundation President and CEO Roland D. Rodriguez. The renovation contribution was part of the Coulter family and Wallace H. Coulter Foundation’s landmark $5 million gift for the advancement of the pathological sciences.

Dr. Azorides R. Morales, former Chief of Pathology Services at Jackson Memorial Hospital, dedicated the new facility to Wallace H. Coulter and Joseph R. Coulter, for their innovative contributions to the field of laboratory medicine. Wallace and Joseph Coulter developed the first commercial blood-cell counter. It changed clinical diagnostics and medical research by replacing labor-intensive and sometimes fallible methods for counting blood cells. Coulter family members attending the dedication were Laura Coulter Jones and husband Michael; Joseph R. Coulter, III; Beth Ann Morgenthau and husband, Tony, and Mary Donavan and husband George.

In addition to the Coulter family, the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation was honored for its contribution to Jackson Memorial Hospital Pathology Services. Attending were Sue Van, President and CEO of the Coulter Foundation; Wayne Barlin, Vice President and General Counsel; Susan Racher, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, and Mara Neal, Director of Research Awards.

The Jackson Memorial Foundation is the principal source of fundraising for Jackson Health System, seeking private philanthropic funds to improve the system’s facilities and to support its priority projects.
