City Year Miami Provides Spring Break Camp for the Children of South-Dade

Monday, March 14, 2011 will mark the first day of spring break and Camp City Year in the South Dade area of Miami-Dade. For the third consecutive year, City Year Miami will provide 250 elementary school children with a safe and fun environment to spend spring break at little to no cost. In the South Dade community, Camp City Year provides a burst of life and excitement for children and offers parents peace of mind while school is out of session. The camp will run for five days with students “traveling around the world” to different ecosystems each day.

Camp City Year is just one example of the work City Year Miami is doing to improve the Miami-Dade community. City Year, a proud member of the AmeriCorps national network, is a national service program that unites17-24 year olds from all backgrounds for a challenging year of full-time service as tutors, mentors and role models. This year, the 82 corps members of City Year Miami are working to help students get back on track academically through literacy interventions, mentoring programs and after school support in public schools across Miami-Dade County.  The 2010-2011 City Year Miami corps consists of eight school based teams across Miami-Dade County and one “Young Heroes” team aimed at promoting community service among middle school students.

Camp City Year has been generously sponsored by BJ’s Wholesale Club and ACM Screen Printing.
