Better World Exhibit Benefits Global Charities during Art Basel

Joining Miami’s December art scene with élan, ARTS FOR A BETTER WORLD (“AFABW”) is a bold endeavor to unite a large-scale commercial exhibition with the non-profit community.  From December 1 to 5, 2010, more than 40 world-class international and United States artists, and nationally-recognized charities Save the Children, American Red Cross, American Cancer Society and Water.org, will present important works across 40,000-square-feet at Soho Studios (NW 22nd Street at NW 1st Avenue, Miami).  The largest curated exhibition in the Wynwood Arts District, a healthy “Better World Café,” youth workshops and an interactive awareness project, utilizing 442 pounds of reusable materials, are all part of AFABW’s ambitious program.  For more information call 754.423.3226 or visit the website at www.ArtsForABetterWorld.com.

AFABW is not a charity.  Co-founders Rod and Sandrine Kukurudz, along with associate curator Ilana Vardy, have instead produced a self-sustainable platform that champions the causes of its artists and partners.  In a unique arrangement, Save the Children, Water.org, American Red Cross and American Cancer Society will be exhibiting their respective projects under one roof and sharing five percent of total artwork sales.  The five-day exhibit, taking place during one of the country’s most influential art forums, is designed to delight and educate audiences, while appealing to the sensibilities of art collectors and industry professionals.

“Our common philosophy unites the many artists traveling from various continents to be with us,” said Rod Kukurudz, co-founder of AFABW.  “They think ‘better world,’ they act ‘better world,’ they create art for a ‘better world’ and so they contribute to a better world.  Our every day actions and way of being is what make the collective difference.”

Participating artists were selected from Argentina, Congo, Cuba, Ecuador, England, France, Haiti, Nigeria, Panama, South Africa, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela, including Jorge Aramburu, Osi Audu, Wang Chuan, Brandon Opalka, Larry Silver and Joe Zammit-Lucia, to name a few.

AFABW will also challenge visitors with a compelling series of workshops.  In partnership with Rethink & Reuse Center Miami, organizers will set up 442 pounds of clean, reusable materials that audiences will transform into an installation of sustainable art throughout the course of the exhibition.  On Sunday, December 5, AFABW will offer the first 500 children free healthy lunches and art workshops by internationally-celebrated artist Olga Sinclair.

Admission is $10 for adults and entry is free of charge for persons under 18 years, members of the Armed Forces and Art Basel VIP Pass holders.  A portion of the admissions from each entry ticket will go toward funding the transportation of children from their schools to AFABW for weekday field trips.

The VIP and Press Preview will be held Tuesday, November 30, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. The guest-list-only portion of the evening will transform the Soho Arts Pavilion & Lounge, which will house the major charity projects, into an exclusive arts and culinary space. Guests will be treated to complimentary spirits and organic beverages, signature hors d’oeuvres, delectable chocolates, gluten-free macaroons and desserts by Florian Bellanger, MadMac’s acclaimed chef and celebrity judge of the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars.

The AFABW’s Opening Celebration will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., with powerful performances and spectacular presentations. To request an invitation to the opening, please visit www.ArtsForABetterWorld.com/opening.
