Bakehouse Art Complex is proud to announce a new partnership with the prestigious Cité internationale des arts, a long-standing residency program based in Paris, France. This exciting new partnership will provide a Bakehouse artist, selected through a juried process, an exceptional professional and creative development opportunity to spend two months abroad at the studio residency program in the Marais. Since its foundation in 1965, the Cité internationale des arts has encouraged cross-cultural dialogue and provided a place where artists can engage with diverse audiences through residency programs ranging from two months to a year.

“The Cité internationale des arts is honored to welcome artists from Bakehouse Art Complex to join the over 1200 artists who come in residence at the Cité each year. We are excited about this new partnership and look forward to the creative exchanges and professional opportunities a residence at the Cité can offer to Bakehouse artists.” – Bénédicte Alliot, Director General of the Cité internationale des arts.

“Bakehouse is delighted to establish this exchange, the first such partnership for our organization. We are thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity to one of our artists. We also look forward to what our institution can learn from this prestigious affiliation with the Cité internationale des arts, as we envision and plan the future development of our campus and the evolution of our organization and program.” – Cathy Leff, Executive Director of Bakehouse Art Complex.

Every year, over 1,200 artists from over one hundred different countries and representing almost every creative discipline—visual arts, music and performing arts, exhibition curators, art historians, writers, and researchers—stay in one of the 325 live-in studios at the Cité internationale des arts, whose campus is divided between the Marais and Montmartre.

Through several artist-in-residence programs and with the help of its many partners, the Cité internationale des arts has provided artists of all disciplines the opportunity to live and work in Paris, advance their creative projects, and foster dialog and exchange with artists from around the world. The Cité internationale des arts allows artists to work in an environment conducive to creation and open to meetings with professionals from Paris’ rich cultural milieu. Residents benefit from customized support from the Cité internationale des arts’ team and access to the depth and diversity of Paris’s museums and other cultural resources and assets.

Resident Programs

  • Monthly get-togethers: Every month, the Cité internationale des arts invites all its residents to a social mixer. This convivial moment is an opportunity to meet and exchange with other residents and the Cité Internationale des arts’ team.
  • Cultural offerings: At the start of every month, the Cité internationale des arts presents an events program designed for residents interested in exploring the artistic and cultural offerings in Paris and the Île-de-France region. This program also facilitates contact between residents and allows them to discuss their careers and artistic practice with expert professionals.
  • The “Open Studios: Work in Slow Motion”: This weekly event comprises a series of visits to the studios and workshops of artists in residence and culture professionals. They are organized for a public of art professionals invited by the Cité internationale des arts. As they are also open to the public, every Wednesday from 6 – 9 pm, visitors can discover, in situ, the work in progress of a select number of residents.
  • Shared studios: Engraving, screen-printing, and ceramic studios are available at the Cité internationale des arts for collective use. They are open to both resident artists and professional non-residents. Introductory workshops are organized yearly so resident artists can discover new techniques.
  • The “Carte Cité”: Upon arrival at the Cité internationale des arts, residents receive a free card, the “Carte Cité,” that entitles them to free admission and/or discounted rates for most of Paris’s cultural institutions, theaters, and artist’s supply stores.

Support

Support for this residency is made possible through a donation from Bakehouse Board President Jason Korman in honor of City of Miami Chairwoman Christine King and The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation, and from a portion of the proceeds raised at Bakehouse’s November 4 fundraiser, FUTURES | VISIONS | VISIONARIES.
