Rachel Lee Hovnanian's "The Perfect Trade-Off" Opens at The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach for Art Basel Miami Beach 2026

This Art Basel Miami Beach, The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach will present The Perfect Trade-Off, a solo exhibition by American conceptual artist Rachel Lee Hovnanian. On view December 1–8, the exhibition spans the hotel's landmark Art Deco lobby and beachfront, debuting new work alongside pieces that trace Hovnanian's decades-long inquiry into how technology shapes attention, imagination, and human connection.

The centerpiece of the beachfront presentation is Poor Teddy in Memoriam (2026), a monumental black-patinated bronze sculpture depicting a child's teddy bear lying as if dropped, surrounded by flowers as though being mourned — presented publicly for the first time. The work invites viewers to consider what may happen to childhood imagination as technology increasingly creates ready-made worlds for children.

In the hotel's Art Deco lobby, Dinner for Ten (2026) revisits the dinner table as a place of ritual and human connection. An elaborate table is set for ten, but monitors occupy nine chairs, each depicting a person absorbed in a phone — leaving a single chair for the viewer. As the feast deteriorates, the installation reveals what may be lost when shared experiences give way to the worlds of our screens. The work can be experienced from multiple vantage points, including Lapidus Bar with cocktails by José Andrés Group.

Additional works include FMLMBD (F**k My Life My Battery's Dead) (2019), which transforms a vintage three-wheeled Piaggio Ape into a functioning phone-charging station, and Motherboard (Jupiter) (2024), whose reflective, screen-like surface bridges Hovnanian's earlier investigations of digital identity with her current questions about AI and attention.

"Technology and our digital lives have been a focus of my work for a long time, but we're entering a very different moment," said Hovnanian. "It's no longer simply a tool; it's learning who we are, anticipating what we want, and removing more and more friction from our lives. The Perfect Trade-Off asks what we gain from that, but also what we may give up in return."

The Perfect Trade-Off is open to the public December 1–8, with works on view in The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach lobby and beachfront during regular hotel operating hours. The hotel is located at 1 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139. For reservations or more information, visit ritzcarlton.com/miasb or call 800-241-3333.

The PGM Edit

Love Miami

Hovnanian has been asking questions about technology and human connection for decades. What makes "The Perfect Trade-Off" feel different is the timing: we're no longer talking about distraction. We're talking about AI that learns who you are, anticipates what you want, and removes friction from your life. The exhibition asks what we gain from that — and what we quietly give up. "Poor Teddy in Memoriam" is the image that stays with you: a child's bear, mourned like a person, surrounded by flowers on the beachfront of one of Miami Beach's most storied hotels. That's a strong piece of work.
