Michael Ealy Joins The Following as Villain Theo on FOX

On March 26, 2015, FOX held a press conference call with actor Michael Ealy ahead of his debut as Theo Noble in Season 3 of The Following. The psychological thriller, which airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. on FOX, stars Kevin Bacon as former FBI agent Ryan Hardy. Ealy joined the series as its new primary antagonist — a methodical, identity-shifting killer unlike any villain the show had introduced before.

Known largely for playing protagonists and romantic leads, Ealy described the role as a deliberate stretch — and one he embraced fully.

Playing the villain

"For me it's about showing range and versatility," Ealy said, "and when the opportunity to join The Following came up, it was the first or second time I was given the opportunity to actually play a villain. You're right, I have played a lot of good guys, but it's a nice change. It's a really nice change of pace. I don't know if I prefer it so much as I just enjoy being able to go back and forth."

Distinguishing Theo from Joe Carroll

One of Ealy's chief creative concerns was avoiding the shadow of James Purefoy's Joe Carroll, the show's established and beloved villain. "It was kind of daunting to walk onto the show knowing that you're going to play a villain and the infamous Joe Carroll was already a well-established villain," he said. "One of the things that I tried to do that wasn't always scripted was try and steer away from Joe's rhythm of speech and the clever banter back and forth. I wanted to make Theo a bit more terrifying and not go down the same path as Joe. I didn't want him to be familiar to Joe — I tried to make him more scary."

Theo the chameleon

Showrunner Brett Mahony described Theo as a chameleon, and Ealy elaborated on what that means in practice: "Theo has the ability to morph into various identities, both physically and logistically. If he takes on a different persona, he'll change himself physically — not like a shape-shifter, but with disguises and all that stuff. At one point he even wears contact lenses. He goes into full detail whenever he takes on an identity to kill. I think it's his passion. And when he does pursue his passion, he tends to morph into another identity as opposed to killing just as Theo."

Joining an established cast

Ealy was candid about the anxiety of stepping into a show mid-run: "There's always going to be some hesitation in joining a pretty well-established cast because you're definitely going to feel like the new guy." But the welcome he received quickly put those concerns to rest. "This crew is so much fun to work with, and so amazing that literally by day two I felt like I belonged and I felt welcomed. I felt like, okay, this is going to be a fun ride — and it has been. It's lived up to that hype."

The Following Season 3 aired Monday nights at 9 p.m. on FOX beginning in 2015. Michael Ealy's Theo Noble served as the season's primary antagonist alongside the returning cast led by Kevin Bacon.
