Giuliana Rancic and Nick Jonas on Co-Hosting the 2013 Miss USA Competition on NBC

On June 11, 2013, Giuliana Rancic and Nick Jonas joined a press call ahead of the 2013 Miss USA Competition, airing live on NBC Sunday, June 16th at 9 p.m. It was Giuliana's third year co-hosting and Nick's first — he and his brothers were also set to perform a medley from their new record, premiering a new song during the broadcast.

Giuliana's Miss Maryland losses — and the dream that came true anyway

Asked why the pageant keeps inviting her back, Giuliana was candid about her own history with the competition. "I actually competed for the Miss Maryland USA pageant twice and completely lost. I bombed final answers both times." But the dream of being on that stage never left her. "I would call my agent and say, 'You've got to get me to host Miss USA.' My big dream was to be on that stage and I am on the stage — but as a host. My dream happened, and even more so than I had expected."

The Olivia Culpo red dress story

Giuliana revealed she had a direct hand in one of the most memorable Miss Universe moments of recent years. When Olivia Culpo — Miss USA 2012, who went on to win Miss Universe — was deciding between two final gowns, she showed Giuliana both options. "I strongly urged her to wear this one dress. It was a low-cut red dress. Most people told her not to wear it and I said, 'Olivia, you've got to wear this. The other one is so pageanty and this one is more fashion, more you, more on trend. The judges are going to get it.'" Culpo wore it at the last minute. She won. "She always said to me she was happy we had that conversation."

Nick Jonas: single, excited, and taking Giuliana's lead

When asked directly whether he was single, Nick didn't hesitate. "I am single at the moment so I'm obviously very excited for this show." He had met Olivia Culpo the previous year — his brother Joe was a judge — and called her "incredible." On co-hosting: "I'm going to take Giuliana's lead as she's the pro here." Giuliana pushed back: "Nick has been on countless stages performing in front of tons of people. He's done this so much. I think it's going to be a lot of fun." The Jonas Brothers were also set to perform a medley including a new song premiere during the broadcast.

Father's Day in Vegas

The broadcast fell on Father's Day — a first for Giuliana's husband Bill Rancic, who had recently become a father. "He's going to come in just for the show and we'll have a nice dinner at LAVO in Vegas. It's Bill's first Father's Day." Nick was still working out whether his own father would make the trip to Las Vegas to watch the performance. "I was like, are you kidding me? You absolutely have to come. This is Miss USA — it's every father's dream."

On live television, wardrobe malfunctions, and anything-can-happen energy

Giuliana acknowledged that the live format keeps her on edge every year. "The first year I did it I had a little bit of a wardrobe malfunction — my slit was a little too high — and of course it's live so I didn't know until I checked my Twitter in the commercial break." Her advice to Nick: "Even if something goes wrong, it can make for a fun, great moment. Embrace it. There are no rules." The 2013 Miss USA Competition aired Sunday, June 16th at 9 p.m. on NBC from Las Vegas.
