Gospel Music Pioneers, THE CANTON SPIRITUALS, to Headline Free Gospel Sundays at the Adrienne Arsht Center

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, in partnership with Miami gospel radio station WMBM 1490 AM and Jubilate, Inc., proudly announces its next FREE GOSPEL SUNDAYS concert featuring Grammy-nominated gospel quartet, The Canton Spirituals. Special guests include the Mount Tabor Full Gospel Baptist Church Choir and The Free Gospel Sundays Choir.  This concert is the latest installment in the Adrienne Arsht Center’s extraordinarily popular FREE GOSPEL SUNDAYS series, which has been supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation since the 2008/09 season, and just received a two-year, $200,000 Knight Arts Challenge Grant to continue the series into the Center’s 2010/11 season.

The concert of traditional gospel music, which takes place on February 21, 2010 at 4:00 pm in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall, coincides with National Black History Month. TV personality Jawan Strader of CBS-4 (WFOR) will host the event.

“Now in its third year, our FREE GOSPEL SUNDAYS series has proven to be a rousing success, both from a musical standpoint and in its ability to unite our diverse community,” said M. John Richard, President and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “We are thankful for Knight Foundation’s generous grant, which will enable us to continue presenting these inspiring performances for another two years.”

The Knight Arts Challenge is a community-wide contest to fund the best arts ideas in South Florida. By supporting this series, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation challenges South Florida organizations to create and invest in the arts while fostering community togetherness.

“You don’t have to look further than the packed aisles of the Knight Concert Hall to know that FREE GOSPEL SUNDAYS brings South Floridians together as only the arts can,” Dennis Scholl, Miami program director for Knight Foundation, said.

Founded in 1943, The Canton Spirituals are the pioneers of traditional gospel music.  Considered by many as gospel music’s number one quartet, The Canton Spirituals has released many hit albums including Live in Memphis and Living the Dream: Live in Washington, D.C. The group has performed with notable artists such as Take 6, The Sounds of Blackness, Mom and Pop Winans, Shirley Caesar, and The Williams Brothers. They will be joined by the Miami-based Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church Choir and the Free Gospel Sundays Mass Choir.
